How many players are on the NBA rosters in total?

In the vast realm of professional basketball, the NBA stands as the pinnacle of competition, boasting an intricate web of talent woven into the fabric of its 30 teams. While the spotlight often gravitates towards the larger-than-life superstars, the essence of the NBA lies in its team dynamics. This begs the question; how many players truly populate the NBA rosters in any given year?

A simplistic calculation would lead one to believe that each NBA team, with the ability to sign up to 15 players during a regular season, would result in a total of 450 players in the league. However, a closer examination reveals that this number is a mere baseline, and the actual figure consistently surpasses this estimate.

Total number of players in recent seasons

Recent seasons have seen an expansion in the number of NBA players:

  • 2022-23 Season: 560

  • 2021-22 Season: 550

  • 2020-21 Season: 543

  • 2019-20 Season: 525

  • 2018-19 Season: 535

  • 2017-18 Season: 540 (marked by the introduction of two-way player contracts)

  • 2016-17 Season: 486

  • 2015-16 Season: 476

  • 2014-15 Season: 492

So, why does the total player count vary each year?

The initial calculation presumed a maximum of 15 players per NBA team, but reality offers a more intricate scenario. Some teams, bound by the NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, carry fewer than 15 standard contracts. The league mandates that each team must maintain a minimum of 13 players (12 active plus 1 inactive), with a league-wide average of at least 14 players per team.

For instance, during the 2021-22 season, the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, and Utah Jazz operated with just 14 players under standard NBA contracts.

What are two-way and 10-day contracts?

Moreover, the introduction of two-way contracts since the 2017-18 season adds a layer of complexity. Each NBA team can sign up to two players on two-way contracts, allowing G League players the opportunity to split their time between the NBA and the developmental league. These players, although part of the team, do not count towards the 15-man roster limit.

Teams also utilise 10-day contracts, a strategic manoeuvre to address unforeseen spikes in injuries. These short-term signings, typically allowed after January 5 in a regular league year, contribute to the fluctuating player count throughout the season.

In practice, NBA team rosters commonly consist of 16 to 19 players due to the inclusion of two-way players and those signed on 10-day contracts. Movement within the league, including waivers, buyouts, and new signings, further impacts the total number of players.

Revisiting our calculations

It is essential to note that while the total number of NBA players may exceed 500 in any given league year, the number of active players at any given time is limited to 390, as each team can only have 13 active players during a game. Some players may have minimal playing time but still play crucial roles in team practices and serve as insurance against injuries.

Intriguingly, the number of players participating in the NBA playoffs dwindles significantly, as only 16 teams qualify for the postseason. Additionally, certain players may register zero minutes played during the regular season due to the NBA's practice of rounding playtime to the nearest minute.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the NBA's ever-changing roster dynamics paint a fascinating picture of the league's depth and complexity. Beyond the star-studded line-ups, the league thrives on the contributions of a diverse array of players, each playing a unique role in the intricate tapestry of professional basketball.
