In a nail-biting showdown at the 2024 World Snooker Championship, Chinese sensation Si Jiahui emerged victorious against three-time world champion Mark Williams, clinching a thrilling 10-9 victory with a nerve-wracking final-frame break. The Crucible Theatre witnessed a display of sheer determination as Jiahui showcased nerves of steel, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.

Si Jiahui's moment of glory came in the final frame, where he crafted a decisive break of 77, securing his triumph over the seasoned veteran, Williams. The audacious display of skill underscored the 21-year-old’s potential as a future world champion, a sentiment echoed by Williams himself.

Reflecting on the intense encounter, Mark Williams acknowledged Si Jiahui's excellence, labelling his final frame break as one of the finest displays of composure under pressure. Williams expressed his belief that if Si Jiahui could replicate such performances consistently, he could undoubtedly ascend to the pinnacle of the sport. "He’s excellent," Williams told SportsBoom.com. "That's one of the best breaks you're going to see in a decider, especially when you're under pressure."

When queried about Si Jiahui's prospects of clinching the coveted World Championship title, Williams didn't mince his words. "I think he’s definitely got potential to go onto win the World Championship this year," he asserted, highlighting the young player's remarkable talent and competitive spirit.

Gracious in victory, Si Jiahui expressed his gratitude for Williams' compliments while maintaining a humble demeanour. Through his translator, he conveyed his determination to strive for excellence but tempered expectations of an immediate triumph. "I'm very happy with those compliments from him," Si Jiahui remarked. "I will try my best to do it, but I don’t think that at my level I can go onto win it."

In the aftermath of the gripping match, Jiahui also reflected on his mental preparedness and the invaluable experience gained from his previous Crucible appearance. Despite holding a substantial lead at one point in the match, he approached each frame with the mindset of a challenger, alleviating the burden of expectation. "Neither of us had a brilliant game, but the game itself was brilliant," Jiahui noted. "It was very nip and tuck, but I somehow kept a calm mindset going into that final frame and was able to close out the match."

Jiahui's remarkable journey at the Crucible Theatre began last year when he made his debut in the prestigious tournament. Against all odds, he displayed remarkable composure and skill, reaching the semi-finals in his inaugural appearance. However, his quest for the title was halted by eventual champion Luca Brecel, who emerged victorious in their encounter. 

Throughout the match, the Chinese youngster never considered himself a favourite, even when in a commanding position. This mindset, he revealed, helped him maintain focus and composure, ultimately leading to his triumph over the formidable Williams. "I felt like I was the challenger all game, even when I was up [8-5], I didn’t feel pressure to win," he explained.
