John Goliath is a copywriter and editor with 20 years' experience in the sports media industry. John, a Tottenham Hotspur tragic, studied journalism in the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and has worked for two of the biggest media houses in South Africa.

John Goliath

He started his career as a junior cricket and rugby writer with the Afrikaans daily Die Burger in Port Elizabeth - now known as Gqeberha - in 2004 before moving back to Cape Town to become the paper’s football writer in 2007.

John covered Bafana Bafana - the South African national football team - at the Africa Nations Cup (Afcon) in Ghana 2008 for Die Burger before joining the Cape Times and the Independent Newspapers group later that same year.

During his time as senior football at the Cape Times, John covered the 2009 Confederation Cup and 2010 World Cup for the Independent group, as well as various Afcons.

In 2015 John was appointed the Cape Times’ senior rugby writer, covering Super Rugby and the Springboks.

In 2016 John made the transition into the digital space with the now defunct KweseSport and ESPN Africa as the Digital Rugby Editor.

In 2019, John worked as a freelance writer at Highbury Media, where he contributed rugby, football, cricket and golf content for their online and magazine platforms.

Over the past four years John has been working as IOL Sport editor.
