Mathews is an experienced public relations practitioner, journalist, and photographer. He began his career as a sports reporter at the Zambia Daily Mail, one of the country's leading publications.

During his seven years at the Daily Mail, he covered major football events, including the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, the CAF Champions League, the Confederation Cup, and the local league.
He currently serves on the France Football Ballon d'Or voting panel and was named 2017 Zambia Sports Reporter of the Year by the Ministry of Sport.
