Pat Brown is destined to dominate the cruiserweight division, one of British boxing’s most recognisable figures has predicted, as his professional career continues to gather momentum.
The former Great Britain Olympian, widely regarded as having one of the most loyal followings in the sport, claimed his second straight win since entering the paid ranks in Birmingham last weekend.
Having beaten the durable Argentine Federico Grandone on debut three months ago, Brown took a little over four minutes to bludgeon Ivan Duka of Croatia into submission at the bp pulse LIVE Arena.
With the Mancunian’s promoters Matchroom scheduling their protege’s third outing for early next month, Brown is being groomed to challenge for the English and British titles soon after Christmas.
Speaking exclusively to SportsBoom, Sam Brown, the 25-year-old’s manager, insisted Eddie Hearn’s faith in his client’s talent is not misplaced, saying: “Pat will go through the cruiserweights like a knife through butter. Make no mistake whatsoever about that."
“Mark my words, this lad is going all the way. That’s a definite. There’s no ‘maybe’s there."
“Pat’s got a great fan base which is the envy of most other fighters. They’ll travel to see him anywhere."
“He’s good looking and he talks the talk, without being brash or silly. But the most important thing is - and never forget this - he can fight like beep beep."
“The power Pat has got and the skills, which are only going to get better by the way, are frightening really."
“He’s going to dominate the cruiserweights. Mark my words.”
SHOCK LOSS
With Galal Yafai suffering a shock defeat to Francisco Rodriguez Jr of Mexico in the headline event on Saturday, the manner of Brown’s victory over Duka provided Hearn with some much-needed solace on an otherwise disappointing night.
After dominating the first round of their contest, Brown then floored his opponent with a vicious left uppercut which left him prostrate on the canvas.
Compatriot Lewis Oakford, who has lost only twice in eight bouts, is scheduled to face Brown on the same event as Jack Catterall’s clash with Harlem Eubank.
With Jai Opetaia the dominant global force at 200lbs, having collected the IBF and Ring magazine belts, Brown could be set for some money-spinning assignments in the future if he continues to progress at pace. Badou Jack, Gilberto Ramirez and Yves Ngabu hold the other titles at world level.
“Pat is a phenomenal talent,” Jones said. “We won’t do anything reckless with him. But, the thing is, you can already see that the better the opponent the better Pat is going to perform. He’s got that in him."
“His first opponent, when he carried the show in Altrincham, could easily have fought at domestic level in this country."
"But we’ll bring him on properly and in the right way. We’ll treat Pat right and nurture him as you’d expect.”
Jamie Moore and his trusted lieutenant Nigel Travis are responsible for honing Brown’s potential in the gym.
“I know they’ll be teaching Pat all of the things he’s going to need to do,” Jones said. “They’re perfect for him, that’s why he’s there.”
