    The Basics of NBA

The technical features of the NBA are as follows:

    The Court and its Markings

Basketball courts come in different sizes based on the level and type of basketball being played. A professional NBA court is 94’ x 50’ | 28.65 x 15.24 m. Courts are comprised of several foundational components: the baskets, the three-point arcs, free-throw (foul) lines, and the half court line.

The team’s logo is usually highlighted in the middle of the court with other marking such as the Arena’s name and advertising brands featuring on different sides.

    The Basketball and the Hoop

In basketball, the basket is comprised of a hoop (net) attached to a flat backboard (vertical glass board). Basketball sizes come in variations for different ages, genders, and levels of play. The professional NBA basketball is 29.5” | 74.9 cm in circumference with a diameter between 9.43”-9.51” | 24-24.2 cm. They have a pressure between 7.5-8.5 PSI and cannot exceed a weight of 22 ounces.

Basketball backboards are flat elevated vertical boards with mounted baskets, or rims. Regulation basketball backboards have a width of 72” (183 cm) and a height of 42” (107 cm) with an inner rectangle that is 24” (61 cm) wide and 18” (45.7 cm) tall. All rims are hung 10’ (3.05 m) above the court.

Basketball rims are orange painted goals attached to the backboard in a game of basketball. They have an inner diameter of 18” | 45.72 cm. Nets are hung from the bottom of the rim with lengths between 15”-18” | 38.1-45.7 cm. Basketball rims are mounted 10’ | 3.05 m from the court floor.

    The Rules of the Game

The NBA has a rulebook that explains everything pertaining basketball and how it should be played. These rulebook has 14 rules, which are:

    • R1. Court dimensions and equipment

A Brief History of the NBA

The evolution of the NBA has occurred in the following stages

    The Birth of the NBA

The NBA was created in 1949 when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged with the National Basketball League (NBL). It later adopted the history and statistics of the BBA as its own.

The new league had 17 franchises later scaled down to 11 and later to nine. However, from 1966 to 1984 the NBA expanded rapidly with nine franchises entering the fold to become 18.

In 1976, the NBA and the American Basketball Association (ABA) merged, adding four franchises to the NBA totaling to 22 teams.

Later in the 1980s and 1990s more expansion teams joined the league.

    The Golden Age of Basketball

Many consider the dawn of the 1980 decade to be the beginning of the Golden Age of Basketball until 1998.

However, the draft of rookies Larry Bird and Magic Johnson by the Boston Celtics and LA Lakers respectively, initiating a period of significant growth of fan interest in the NBA.

Other otherworldly superstars also emerged in this decade with Michael Jordan in particular joining the league in 1984 spurring more interest in the league.

    The NBA’s Global Expansion

The NBA's global expansion is a multifaceted effort that is ongoing. It entails bringing on board international players. Currently the best NBA players are from across the globe. The expansion has also focused on diversifying NBA global broadcasting in multiple languages and during primetime across different continents. Additional global expansion efforts made by the NBA include brand building, investment in other leagues in different territories and potential expansion of the NBA outside the United States with teams in different cities potentially joining the league in the future.
