Nigerian football icon Etim Esin has shared his perspective on Gift Orban's difficulties at French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com, Esin attributed the young striker’s struggles to poor adaptation and insufficient playing time.

From Rising Star to Struggles in France

Gift Orban joined Lyon with high expectations, having been heralded as one of Europe’s most promising young strikers.

His impressive record of 32 goals in 52 matches for KAA Gent in Belgium earned him widespread attention. However, since moving to France, Orban has been unable to replicate that form, scoring only five goals in 21 appearances for Lyon.

"Orban is a fantastic talent, as shown by his performances in Norway and Belgium. But the transition from Belgium to France has proven difficult, and he is struggling to adapt to his new environment," Esin explained.

    Issues Before the Move

Orban's troubles began even before his transfer to Lyon. A disagreement with Gent’s management over a failed transfer significantly impacted his confidence and mental state.

Then Gent's coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck revealed the forward lost his focus and enthusiasm he displayed during his first eight months at Gent because he was desperate to move.

Despite this, Esin defended Orban’s decision to move, stating:

"I can’t blame him for wanting to step up. Every player dreams of testing themselves in a bigger league. This path has been a tradition for Nigerian players like Victor Ikpeba and Godwin Opara, who also moved from Belgium to more competitive leagues."

    Lyon Struggles and Off-Field Problems

At Lyon, Orban is finding hard to break into the starting line eleven and the problem has been compounded by both on- and off-field issues. In October, head coach Pierre Sage excluded him from the matchday squad against Auxerre, citing a lack of commitment.

Esin stressed the need for Orban to take control of his career. "The coach isn’t to blame," Esin explained.

"Coaches prioritize winning and won’t disrupt a successful lineup without reason. Orban needs to work hard and seize his opportunities. Ligue 1 is a tougher, more competitive league than the Belgian Pro League, so he must adapt and improve

Winter Transfer: What’s Next for Orban?

As the winter transfer window approaches, Orban has been linked with a move to Turkish giants Besiktas. Esin believes this could be a turning point for the young forward, depending on how his agent handles the situation:

"Consistent game time is essential for his growth. It’s up to his agent to make the right decisions that will help him develop and advance his career," Esin concluded.
