Nigeria international Rasheedat Ajibade is ready for her next football journey, but not without grace, introspection, and ambition.
After parting ways with Atletico Madrid, where she evolved into one of Africa’s top exports, the Super Falcons captain is now the subject of transfer interest across Europe and the United States of America, with Everton Women rumoured to be in the race to secure her signature.
And while official confirmation is still pending, there is a growing possibility of a Nigerian international link-up in Merseyside, with sources suggesting that teaming up with Super Falcons teammate Toni Payne at Everton could also influence Ajibade’s decision.
But for Ajibade, the moment is about purpose, patience, and destiny.
“My dream future is in the hands of God. We commit everything into God's hands. I am speaking with some clubs right now, but there is no conclusion yet. It's still in process," the Nigerian star told SportsBoom.com.
"I currently can't say where I am coming from or where I will be. I have to keep doing my best on and off the pitch. Then I leave the rest for my representative to handle.”
European Sojourn
Ajibade’s European story began in Norway in 2018 and peaked in Spain, where she built her name at Atlético Madrid through consistency, leadership, and moments of magic. She reflects on her time in Europe with deep gratitude.
“My journey so far, I sum it up as God's grace, resilience, patience, and learning. Those three words," she began.
"Every opportunity I have in any club or national level is to make myself better than I was yesterday. I have the opportunity to move from Norway to Spain. It's also another journey for me to grow and evolve, not only as a player but also as a person. It was an excellent and inspiring one that I am grateful for. We see what the future holds.”
Everton in Pole Position – Source Hints Talks
Sources close to Ajibade hinted that Everton are pushing hard to complete a deal for the 24-year-old forward, who is currently evaluating multiple offers. The Merseyside club is undergoing a summer rebuild and views Ajibade as a cornerstone for its plans.
“Yes, Everton are showing intent. They’ve been following Rasheedat for a while now and made their approach recently. Discussions are ongoing and positive. Nothing is signed yet, but they are very serious about bringing her in this summer,” a source, told SportsBoom.
“She’s a versatile forward, a leader on and off the pitch, and has Champions League experience. Everton want someone who can help elevate the squad and also connect with fans. Rasheedat fits that profile perfectly.”
Toni Payne Factor: A Nigerian Link-Up in Merseyside?
One possible attraction for Ajibade in choosing Everton is the prospect of playing alongside fellow Super Falcons star Toni Payne, who joined the club from Sevilla last season. Both players have combined well on international duty for Nigeria and built chemistry on and off the pitch.
“Rasheedat and Toni are close, and that connection could definitely play a role,” the same source added. “Having a familiar face at a new club always helps the transition, especially in a competitive league like the WSL.”
If the deal materialises, Everton would boast two of Nigeria’s brightest attacking midfielders—a boost both on the pitch and for African football visibility in the English game.
Ajibade's Respect for the WSL and NWSL
Ajibade speaks with admiration for both the English Women’s Super League and the U.S.-based NWSL, recognising their growth and global appeal.
“We all know that the US league has evolved a lot in terms of marketing, feasibility, structure and everything. It's on top of the radar right now," the FC Robo product admitted.
"The English league is also no doubt one of the best in the world. Of course, it's the dream of any young player to play in any of those leagues in terms of player economic condition and policies that could elucidate players to keep playing at that level."
"They are very good leagues and there are other leagues that are also good. It will be great to play in all of these leagues to get new experience and challenge.”
Madrid Memories and Champions League Farewell
Ajibade departs Madrid having fulfilled a major milestone—helping Atletico secure UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification for the first time since 2021. For her, it was a collective achievement and a fitting note to end her spell in Spain.
“It's a collective effort at Atletico Madrid. Since I got there, it took about three seasons before qualifying for the Champions League. We are grateful that we are now back and be consistent, even when I leave, the team should be able to maintain that because that is where they deserve to be and go better."
"I am happy to be influential in the Champions League qualification. It's been a great honour and I am very happy for every moment that I spent at the club. I learnt a lot and grew a lot. I eventually made friends that became family.”
With the Morocco 2024 Women's African Cup of Nations on the horizon, Ajibade is entering a pivotal phase in her career. Whether she lands in Merseyside, across the Channel, or across the Atlantic, one thing remains certain: the next stop will be carefully chosen.
