Super Eagles assistant coach Fidelis Ilechukwu says he is not surprised that Nigerian players feature prominently in the 2024 FIFA Best Award nominations.

In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com, Ilechukwu stated that the West African nation is blessed with world-class players capable of excelling in any team globally.

Four Nigerian football stars—Asisat Oshoala, Ademola Lookman, William Troost-Ekong, and Paul Onuachu—earned nominations in various categories for the prestigious awards.

    Our Squad Boasts World-class Players

The nominations, announced by FIFA on Friday, highlight the players’ exceptional performances over the past year. "We are thrilled, though not surprised, by the nominations. Our squad boasts world-class players competing for top teams across Europe, so this recognition is well-deserved," Ilechukwu said.

"This serves as further proof of the incredible quality within the team. However, it also reminds us of the importance of staying focused and working hard. Missing the World Cup is not an option, especially after receiving such honors," he added.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, along with Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, is among the only Africans nominated in the Defender of the Year category.

The nomination caps off a stellar year for the 31-year-old, who won the 2023 AFCON MVP award, was included in the Team of the Tournament, and was shortlisted for the CAF Best Player Award, though he missed the final five.

Ekong is undoubtedly one of the best defenders

Ilechukwu praised Troost-Ekong’s qualities, calling him one of the best defenders in the world.

"Ekong is undoubtedly one of the best defenders in Africa and among the best globally. His passion, dedication, and leadership from the back are invaluable to the team.

"He organizes the defense brilliantly, and his tactical awareness and positive attitude are his greatest strengths. Despite his immense talent, he remains humble, which makes me even prouder of him," Ilechukwu said.

Ademola Lookman, whose standout performances for Atalanta and the Super Eagles have garnered widespread acclaim, earned a nomination in the Best Attacker category for the FIFA Best XI. He will compete against Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Vinícius Júnior.

Additionally, Southampton striker Paul Onuachu is a contender for the Puskás Award, which recognizes the best goal in men’s football.

"It would be a great joy to see them win these awards. Of course, we hope for victory, but even being nominated is a significant achievement. Not every player gets this opportunity, and that alone is something to celebrate," Ilechukwu concluded.
