Victor Collins’ first call-up to the Super Eagles for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers is a story of growth, determination, and a glimpse into the future of Nigerian football.

Though he didn’t make his debut, the Nasarawa United defender has returned to club duties with renewed confidence, scoring a crucial goal in their 2-1 victory over Bendel Insurance.

In this exclusive with Sports Boom.com, Collins shares his experience with the national team, his admiration for Captain Williams Troost-Ekong, and his aspirations for the future.

Training with My Role Model Was a Dream Come True

Reflecting on his time in camp, Collins couldn’t hide his admiration for Super Eagles captain Williams Troost-Ekong, who he has long considered a role model.

“Training alongside Troost-Ekong was like a dream come true,” Collins said with a smile. “He’s a leader in every sense of the word; calm, composed, and always willing to guide younger players.

"Watching him up close, I learned so much about reading the game, positioning, and communication on the field.”

When asked if he sees himself as a potential successor to Troost-Ekong in the national team’s defensive setup, Collins responded with humility and determination: “It’s an honor just to be mentioned in the same breath as him.

"He’s set the standard for defenders in Nigeria. I’m focused on learning and improving every day, and if the opportunity comes to step into that role, I’ll give it my all.”

Leadership Is About More Than What Happens on the Pitch

Collins shared insights into Troost-Ekong’s professionalism and leadership, qualities that stood out during his time in camp.

“One thing that struck me is how much he cares about the team. Whether it’s encouraging someone after a tough session or giving advice during tactical drills, he’s always present,” Collins explained.

“He taught me that leadership isn’t just about what you do on the pitch but how you uplift those around you.”

Scoring My First Goal This Season Was Special

Returning to club duties after the national team camp, Collins made an immediate impact by scoring his first goal of the season in Nasarawa United’s 2-1 victory over Bendel Insurance.

It felt amazing to score, especially coming back from such an inspiring experience with the Super Eagles,” Collins said. “That goal wasn’t just for me; it was for my teammates and the fans who have supported me throughout this journey. It gave me a lot of confidence and reminded me of the hard work ahead.”

The Super Eagles Camp Was Intense but Worth It

Comparing the Super Eagles setup to his club experience, Collins highlighted the elevated level of intensity and professionalism.

“The Super Eagles camp is a different ball game,” he admitted. “The intensity, the focus, the attention to detail; it’s on another level.

"It pushed me to improve and think faster, both on and off the ball. It’s a place where you realize how much work it takes to compete at the highest level.”

Wearing the Green and White Was an Unforgettable Honor

Though Collins didn’t get to make his debut, being part of the squad was a moment he’ll cherish forever.  “Wearing the green and white, even in training, was an honor I can’t describe,” he said.

“It’s not just about football; it’s about representing millions of Nigerians who love and support this team. It’s a responsibility that inspires you to work harder every day.”

He also had a message for fellow players in the NPFL who aspire to play for the national team: “To every home-based player dreaming of this opportunity, know that it’s possible. Stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself.

"The Super Eagles is not just for players abroad; the door is open for all who prove their worth.”

    The Journey Has Just Begun

Victor Collins’ story is one of resilience and ambition. While his time with the Super Eagles has only just begun, his experiences and the lessons learned from leaders like Troost-Ekong have set the stage for a promising future.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity and the experiences so far,” Collins concluded. “This is just the beginning, and I’m ready to keep working, growing, and contributing wherever I can.”

With a strong mindset and a growing skill set, Collins is undoubtedly a player to watch as he continues his rise in Nigerian football.
