What is the League Minimum Salary for NFL?
The highest-paid NFL players earn way more than players earning the league minimum. A majority of those on the minimum salary scale barely earn $55 million throughout their entire career. What is the minimum salary of a player in the NFL?

In the NFL, there is a salary cap, which is a wage cap that imposes a limit on the total amount of money a team can pay its players. The salary cap defines both the per-player limit and total limit. The implication of a cap is; teams cannot go above it. If caps are violated, certain penalties are induced. They include contract cancellations, fines ranging to $5million, and loss of draft picks.
The NFL salary minimum is the base pay that dictates what all players must be paid by their respective teams. Irrespective of experience level or performance, players are cushioned by a financial safety net that maintain a level playing field across the league.
The Minimum Salary for the 2024 NFL Season

For the 2023-24 NFL season, the minimum salary for a player was $750,000. This was the salary for rookies who occupied the lowest pay scale. For NFL players with one-year experience level, the minimum salary was $870,000. The salary increases each year. For instance, for the 2024 NFL season, the minimum salary of a player on the first-year level is currently $795,000. When such a player gets to their third season, the minimum salary would increase to $1.055 million.
There are factors that determine whether a player receives all the money. The player is only bound to receive the entire salary on a minimum contract, if he is on the active 53-man roster, for every week of the 2024 NFL season. However, if the player is moved to the practice squad or gets cut, their salary becomes significantly less than what is listed on the minimum contract. Practice squad players have a different pay scale and are not entitled to a yearly salary. They have a base salary of $11,500 per week, which is determined by their presence on the practice squad.
If a player is moved to the active roster for a game, his pay rate changes. For the service rendered on the 53-man roster, a player is paid an unusual weekly rate that differs from the practice squad rate. In such situations, he earns the league minimum salary as per his experience-level. The payment is prorated on a weekly basis. For example, when a first-year player is added to the 53-man roster, he would earn a weekly salary of $44,166, based on the $795,000 minimum salary of 2024. Therefore, a player who spends the 18-week season on the practice squad earns $207,000 per year.
With regard to the minimum salary for the 2024, rookies getting into the NFL will earn a minimum base salary of 795,000, as noted earlier. The yearly increase of rookie’s base salary since 2021 has progressed as follows:

Although the NFL minimum salary offers a baseline, a number of factors can substantially alter a player’s earning potential. These factors are:
- Playing position: Some positions, such as quarterbacks, earn higher salaries than their counterparts because of their significance and scarcity.
- Performance: A player’s track record, ranging from statistics to on-field production and impact on the team’s success, harbors influence on salary negotiations.
- Draft Status: Players picked in higher rounds of the NFL draft often get larger contracts compared to those whose pick happened in later-rounds or were undrafted.
The NFL minimum salary may appear satisfactory on books. However, given the high cost of living in many league cities, rookie or veteran players on minimum contracts may be required to demonstrate financial prudence, especially at the onset of their careers.
