Exclusive: Wanyama Confident Spurs Can Overcome Inconsistency and Compete for European Glory

Former Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama believes Ange Postecoglou's Spurs can overcome their inconsistency and mount a strong challenge for silverware, particularly in the Europa League. 

Despite a promising start to the 2024-25 season, the London club has struggled in recent weeks and now finds itself sitting in tenth place in the Premier League table.

After enduring a five-game winless streak, Spurs bounced back in style, thrashing struggling Southampton 5-0 in their latest match, with James Maddison shining and scoring a brace at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Wanyama, who made 97 appearances and scored seven goals during his time at Spurs between 2016 and 2020, shared his assessment of the team’s current performance when asked about his former club.
 

INCONSISTENCY IS SPURS’ BIGGEST ISSUE 

The former Celtic and Southampton star believes that inconsistency, largely caused by injuries, remains Spurs' biggest challenge this season, despite their promising start

"This season has been challenging for Spurs due to a lack of consistency. They win one game, but struggle to carry that energy into the next, which I feel stems from fitness issues within the squad," Wanyama told Sportsboom.com.

"Tottenham started the season strongly, showing the quality and promise they possess, but as the season progressed, they slowed down. That inconsistency has affected their standing in the Premier League."

"However, I am confident they will bounce back. These difficult moments happen to even the biggest teams, and Spurs are no exception. The important thing is for the players to regain their rhythm, address fitness concerns, and rediscover their focus."

"This is a club with great potential and talented players and I have no doubt they will return to winning ways, and prove once again why they are considered one of the biggest clubs in the league."

To put things into perspective, at least eight of Tottenham's first-team players are currently sidelined with various injury concerns.
 

A CLUB WITH GREAT QUALITY

Despite the club's current struggles, Wanyama believes Spurs have a strong squad capable of turning things around. 

Nonetheless, he stresses that to do so, they must focus on maintaining consistency for the remainder throughout the season.

He added: "Tottenham are a club with great quality across all areas of the pitch. They have talented players who can perform at the highest level and compete with any team."

"Spurs need to build that stability as a team. I believe that if every player can rediscover their form, stay confident, and work together as a unit, the team will turn things around."

"There is so much potential in that squad, and with consistency, success will follow. Spurs have everything it takes to be at the top again, and I’m sure they will get there."
 

EUROPA TITLE REMAIN WITHIN REACH

At the start of the season, Tottenham were regarded as strong contenders for the Premier League title. 

However, their recent form and current standing have made that goal seem increasingly difficult to achieve. Their struggles have put a significant dent in their title aspirations, making it seem like a near-impossible task at this point in the season.

For Wanyama, it’s premature to dismiss Tottenham, the eight-time FA Cup winners, as he believes they are still on track to challenge for the Europa League title.

"You can’t just write Spurs off because they’re going through a difficult spell. the team is still competing in the Europa League, where I hope they can achieve something meaningful,"

"The Premier League has been particularly challenging, but I believe Spurs have the quality to improve as the season progresses."

"I am confident they will get better, and work their way back to where they deserve to be. You simply can’t count them out."

When asked if he still keeps in touch with his former club after leaving in 2024, he disclosed that: "Tottenham feels like home to me. I always keep track of their progress, whether by watching their games live whenever I’m there or following them closely on TV."

Tottenham face a tough run of fixtures in their next two matches. First, they will host Manchester United in the English League Cup, followed by a high-stakes Premier League encounter with Liverpool just three days later.
