Italy have touched down in South Africa, bracing themselves for what promises to be a physically taxing two-Test series against the reigning world champions, the Springboks.
With the first match set to take place this week in Pretoria, South Africa have named a near full-strength match day 23, a clear signal that the Boks are taking the Azzurri challenge seriously.
For Italy's rising number eight Ross Vintcent, the challenge of facing the world's best isn't daunting but it's an opportunity.
Dominant in Windhoek
The Azzurri warmed up for the Springbok clash with a comprehensive 73–6 victory over Namibia in Windhoek, scoring 11 tries while keeping their try-line untouched. It was a promising performance, but one played in conditions far from ideal.
“It was a very tough game... emotionally and physically,” said Vintcent, reflecting on the altitude factor.
“It was the first time I played at altitude in a while and 1,800 metres above sea level was never going to be easy. We felt it during the week leading up to the Namibia game.”
Despite a few lapses in discipline, the Italians were clinical in attack and resilient on defence, qualities they’ll need to replicate and improve upon when they run out at Loftus Versfeld.
“Namibia are a physical side and it was a good stepping stone for the two Tests we are about to face,” added Vintcent.
“We’re happy we didn’t concede any tries, and from an attacking point of view, 11 tries is very pleasing.”
Familiar Faces, Familiar Fight
Many of Italy’s players are no strangers to the Springbok playing style, thanks to their involvement in the United Rugby Championship [URC} and the Champions Cup. Vintcent, who plays for Exeter Chiefs, has already squared off against the Sharks, giving him a taste of what’s to come.
“I was lucky enough to play the Sharks in December. Going up against some of the big names like [Bongi] Mbonambi, [Aphelele] Fassi, and [Andre] Esterhuizen was a cool experience," Vintcent told SportsBoom.com.
“It definitely helps that a lot of our guys have seen South African opposition in the URC. That experience is crucial, especially in areas like the set piece. Having that exposure to their physical, structured style of play will hopefully put us in good stead.”
Loose Forward Clash Looms
One of the most compelling matchups of the series could be in the loose forward department. Vintcent may find himself battling with the likes of Jasper Wiese, Vincent Tshituka, and Marco van Staden. All powerhouses in their own right. Despite South Africa being without stalwarts Siya Kolisi and Pieter-Steph du Toit, the depth and quality remain world-class.
“I am looking forward to testing myself against the best, if I get picked,” Vintcent said.
“You always want to challenge yourself against the top players, and South Africa definitely have one of the best back rows in world rugby.”
The Quesada Revolution
Italian rugby has experienced a quiet revolution under Argentinian head coach Gonzalo Quesada. Once perennial underdogs in the Six Nations, the Azzurri have shown significant growth in 2024. Drawing against France, defeating Scotland, and showing increasing consistency.
“Gonzalo is quite an innovative coach,” said Vintcent.
“He brings in a lot of experience and a fresh perspective. To some extent, Italy Rugby is on the up under him.”
There is growing belief in the Italian camp not just to compete, but to truly challenge a rugby superpower. While beating South Africa on home soil remains a monumental task, this new-look Azzurri side is not here to merely make up the numbers.
The battle begins in Pretoria. And the Azzurri are ready to fight.
