SportsBoom have researched the top five players in the sport who have won the most ranking titles in snooker history, depicting the number of titles each player has won, along with key milestones in their careers that contributed to their legendary status in their specialist pursuit.

What Makes Ranking Titles the Benchmark?

One metric of determining the greatest players in our sport is by the number of ranking titles won. Ranking tournaments hold greater weight on one’s legacy, but it would be impossible to discredit non-ranking tournaments, considering invitational events show one’s ability amongst the best players.

Take a look at the Masters, for example, a 16-player invitational that focuses on the top 16 players in the Order of Merit table following the conclusion of the sister tournament, the UK Championship. The Masters, like the UK Championship and the World Championship, is part of the Triple Crown, which further adds to one’s status.

The Pinnacle of Snooker: Most Ranking Titles Won

Accumulating ranking titles requires incredible skill, mental fortitude, and longevity. Following the 2025 World Snooker Championship, here are the five players who stand above all others in this regard.

Spotlight on the Legends

Ronnie O’Sullivan

Widely regarded as the greatest snooker player of all time, Ronnie O’Sullivan is the current leader of the most ranking titles accumulated. His illustrious career sees him as the man to beat in this area, in addition to multiple other individual records. He made history in 1993 to win the UK Championship at the tender age of 17, with his last one to date posted at the 2024 World Grand Prix at the age of 48.

Stephen Hendry

Stephen Hendry arguably had the most dominant period in snooker history, winning all seven of his world titles in the 1990s, including five in a row. His fast-flowing attacking snooker appealed to the masses and changed how the sport was played, in addition to setting records that stood the test of time before O’Sullivan bettered them.

John Higgins

John Higgins’ consistency and tactical prowess, combined with mental stamina, put him among the best players to ever pick up a cue. His longevity and all-around game make him a mightily tough opponent to play due to his fearless nature, and he recently bounced back from a four-year title drought to win the World Open and Tour Championship in 2025.

Judd Trump

Judd Trump is quickly on course to catch up to the three veterans in front of him after winning a plethora of titles in recent years. Trump has established himself as a major force in the snooker lexicon, racking up trophies for fun and is arguably at the peak of his powers considering his impeccable natural talent.

Steve Davis

Steve Davis was the first true trailblazer in the snooker world, who contributed to the popularity of the sport in its heyday in the 1980s. He defined integrity and professionalism in the game and set the benchmark records that Hendry motivated himself to better, and racked up an incredible number of ranking titles despite the fewer tournaments on offer.

Key Observations

The most prominent observation from this list is that all five players derive from either England or Scotland, showcasing the dominance that the United Kingdom has in the snooker world. Only Neil Robertson (Australian) and Ding Junhui (Chinese) are the non-British-based players to feature on the top ten all-time ranking titles total tally.

All five players attributed with the most titles have all displayed impressive longevity in some form, with Trump winning ranking titles over 13 years, while O’Sullivan and Higgins have their victories spread across an incredible 31 years. We do not doubt that the former will continue picking up more ranking titles in the seasons to come.

In addition, each of these five players is known for their dominance in a specific era. Davis contributed to putting snooker on the map in the 1980s, before Hendry dominated in the 1990s, while Trump has won most of his ranking tournaments in the 2020s. O’Sullivan and Higgins are exceptions, showcasing their immense skill throughout the 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.

Conclusion

These five players have changed the game for the world of snooker, and we should celebrate their successes and contributions to the sport in their own way. While an influx of ranking titles has grown in recent seasons, further presenting players with more opportunities, these five players are widely respected by fans and journalists alike.

It takes incredible skill to play the sport, and their outstanding dedication and longevity remind everyone of their breathtaking ability at potting balls at all angles.

Players with a proven history of winning multiple ranking titles demonstrate consistent performance under pressure, a key factor bettors weigh when assessing tournament favourites and match odds.
