ODI cricket has transitioned from a sedate into a more intense format where a premium is now placed on fast-scoring batsmen who will pounce on any loose deliveries from the quickies or spin bowlers. The most destructive ODI batsmen have been uncompromising, seizing opportunities with both hands by blasting shots to all parts of the ground. Among the icons, past and present, who were a joy to watch in full flow were Shahid Afridi, Glenn Maxwell, and Andre Russell, who have been discussed on this page.

The Modern Mavericks: Maxwell, Klaasen, and Buttler
One of the top power hitters in ODI history, Glenn Maxwell made it extremely difficult for opposing captains to set up fields. His innate ability to make unconventional strokes such as reverse sweeps and pull shots look routine was impressive, but he has trailed a blaze, and he once fired an unbeaten knock of 201. Maxwell’s perfect ‘Industry Insights’ rating and fabulous ‘SB Score’ encompassed this.
Heinrich Klaasen’s power hitting, meanwhile, has been a sight to behold, and he has come alive during powerplay sessions. The South African wicketkeeper-batsman once churned out 174 off 83 balls in 2003, which at the time was the second-highest individual score by a batter at No.5 or lower in the ODIs. His belligerence at the crease saw him post a superb ‘SB Score’, and he endeared himself to the industry experts.
Jos Buttler’s ODI stats, similarly, make for impressive reading, and his aggression has represented the blueprint of England’s daring ‘Bazball’ philosophy. He’s hit the most ODI centuries of the players on this list (11), and he was integral to England’s 2019 World Cup triumph over New Zealand in a dramatic Super Over. An exceptional ‘SB Score’ supported by a favourable ‘Industry Insights’ mark underlined his importance to the cause.
The Original Game-Changer: Shahid Afridi
Registering over 8,000 ODI career runs, Shahid Afridi, who notched up the most sixes in the format, was no shrinking violet. The leg-spinning all-rounder boasted a phenomenal boundary count for Pakistan and struck fear into opposition bowlers. Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya found that out to his cost in 1996 when Afridi blasted 28 from an over en route to his 102 off just 37 balls, one of the quickest ODI tons. His legendary status and brilliance with the bat earned him an excellent ‘SB Score’ and ‘Industry Insights’ marks.
The All-Round Powerhouses: Pandya and Russell
One of Hardik Pandya’s main calling cards has been his fierce hitting, and he has an array of shots up his sleeve. His stats showed his ability to rise to the occasion for India, carving out a strong ‘SB Score’ and ‘Industry Insights’ rating.
Andre Russell, in contrast, who had the best ODI strike rate of all time (130.22), hit the deck hard with the ball, but he was equally brilliant with the bat. A supreme athlete, Russell is an undoubted West Indies icon, and his high expert rating accompanied by a solid ‘SB Score’, cemented his status as one of the most feared all-rounders in the game.
Conclusion on ODI’s Most Explosive Batsmen
Pitting Afridi vs Maxwell and Russell against each other was a fun exercise, but our model, which balanced stats with expert opinions, crowned Maxwell as the most aggressive ODI batsman. As one of the best ODI finishers, he was given a licence to thrill, using brute force to get Australia over the line in high-stakes situations.
However, that’s not to say the other batters mentioned don’t deserve credit. They brought plenty of flair and they were masters of their craft. More often, they could turn matches on their head, and their explosive batting redefined the notion of aggression in limited-overs cricket.
