Exclusive: Tottenham Hotspur Target Nigerian Youth Starlet in Surprise Transfer Move

Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a surprise move for Nigerian youth international Onuche Ogbelu, SportsBoom understands.

Tunisia to Tottenham?

The 21-year-old midfielder currently plies his trade in Tunisia for Espérance Sportive de Tunis, the reigning Tunisian Ligue 1 champions. Espérance, nicknamed “The Beast of Africa,” are enjoying a strong CAF Champions League campaign, sitting atop their group, and remaining unbeaten in their first three matches.

Ogbelu has also been a standout performer on the international stage, playing a pivotal role in Nigeria's U20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign earlier this year, where the Super Eagles clinched third place.

Known for his composure, tactical awareness, and ability to bypass opposition pressing, Ogbelu is highly regarded as a defensive midfielder with excellent ball distribution skills. 

His qualities have drawn comparisons to Senegalese international Pape Matar Sarr, who similarly rose through Africa’s youth football ranks before breaking into European football.

Agent Talks

The potential move was revealed by Swiss agent Wissem Charmiti, who specialises in scouting and transfers within African football hotspots like Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria. 

Sources suggest that Spurs view Ogbelu as a long-term prospect rather than an immediate first-team contender. Should a deal materialise as early as January, the player is expected to be loaned out to continue gaining first-team experience.

Ogbelu's profile fits Tottenham’s strategy of identifying and nurturing young talent, and he could serve as future competition for Sarr in the heart of midfield.
