Exclusive: Bayer Leverkusen considering swoop for Christian Eriksen

Bayer Leverkusen are considering signing free agent Christian Eriksen, with former Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand keen on a reunion. Eriksen has been without a club since leaving Manchester United, rejecting offers from Wrexham, Burnley, and Fenerbahce. He is training with Malmo but is looking to play in mainland Europe. Eriksen's career includes successful spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan.

Bayer Leverkusen want to explore the possibility of signing free agent Christian Eriksen, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The German club have appointed former Denmark national coach Kasper Hjulmand as the successor to Erik Ten Hag, who was sacked just two games into the season.

Hjulmand is a huge admirer of the Danish playmaker, who he worked with closely during his four-year spell as coach.

His spell in charge of the national side coincided with the harrowing episode where Eriksen collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest.

And our sources understand Hjulmand would be interested in a reunion with the star, capped 146 times by his country.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since being released by Manchester United at the end of last season and was left out of the squad for Denmark’s recent internationals due to his lack of game time.

The midfielder has been in talks with numerous clubs but is yet to find a project he is interested in.

His agent confirmed talks over an audacious move to Championship newbies Wrexham earlier in the summer.

Interest from promoted Burnley and Turkish club Fenerbahce was also rebuffed by the Denmark legend.

Earlier this year Eriksen confirmed that he would like to play outside of England and return to mainland Europe, albeit he ruled out a move back to his native Denmark.

Eriksen is currently training at Swedish champions Malmo, but the registration deadline for the Allsvenskan was August 31 and Malmo have also submitted their full Europa League squad.

Long History in England

Eriksen moved to Tottenham Hotspur off the back of a hat-trick of successive Eridivisie titles at the club.

He became a cult hero at White Hart Lane, where he made almost 300 appearances during a seven-year stay at the club.

Eriksen moved to Inter Milan in 2020, but his time at the club was cut short following his cardiac arrest due to Serie A rules not permitting players to play with implanted defibrillators.

Compatriot Thomas Frank gave Dirksen the chance to get his career back on track with a six-month deal at Brentford before he spent three seasons at Manchester United.
