After nearly a decade of footballing adventures across five countries and three continents, Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has finally returned to where it all began, FC Nantes.
The 28-year-old Nigerian international, who on Tuesday signed a three-year deal with the French club, says this homecoming is about far more than football. It’s about identity, legacy, and unfinished business.
Awaziem first joined Nantes on loan from FC Porto during the 2017/18 season, making 22 appearances and earning plaudits for his composure and versatility in defence.
Nantes is like home
Since then, he’s built a journeyman’s résumé; from stints in Spain (Leganés), Croatia (HNK Rijeka), Turkey (Alanyaspor), and most recently in the United States. But the call from Nantes never felt like just another transfer.
“It’s incredible! I’m delighted to be back here. It’s a real joy!” Awaziem said in an exclusive chat shortly after penning his return.
His decision, he says, was instinctive; drawn by emotional connection, familiarity, and the club’s firm belief in his growth since leaving about 7 years ago.
“I was in contact with FC Nantes, who wanted me back. I immediately felt it was the right time. When the opportunity presented itself, I didn’t hesitate for a second to come back, because for me, Nantes is like home. The people are lovely, the club is great, and I was really looking forward to getting back into that environment," he told SportsBoom.com.
In recent seasons, FC Nantes have flirted with both triumph and turbulence; winning the Coupe de France in 2022, yet narrowly avoiding relegation in subsequent campaigns. With his prime years ahead, Awaziem is confident he’s returning as a more mature, battle-tested centre-back ready to help anchor the team’s rebuild.
Backed by the new manager
Part of that belief comes from his early conversations with Nantes’ new head coach, Luís Castro who has made a strong impression on the Nigerian.
“Yes, I’ve already had the opportunity to speak with him. Personally, I consider him a very good coach, but also a good person on a human level. Tactically, he’s excellent and has already proven his talent at his previous clubs. I have confidence in him to have a great season. I’m convinced he’ll get the best out of the team.”
As for his own ambitions over the next three seasons, Awaziem isn’t coy: this return is about impact and silverware.
“My main goal is to help the team achieve its ambitions each season. I also want to contribute to winning trophies, competing at the highest level against the best teams, and bringing FC Nantes back to the top.”
For a player who has experienced the full spectrum of football, rising through Porto’s youth ranks, battling for minutes in Europe’s top leagues, and becoming a key part of Nigeria’s national team; this move is symbolic. It marks a return to his roots with the wisdom of experience and a hunger for redemption.
At 28, Awaziem is no longer the promising loanee of 2017/18 season. He’s back as a leader, a believer; and most importantly, as one of Nantes’ own.
