Lionel Messi
When choosing between Messi and Ronaldo, it's also going to be a close run thing and again, often comes down to personal preference. You could be someone who prefers the style and grace of Messi or you might prefer the direct precision of Ronaldo. However, there is one clear thing that separates the two and that is silverware and personal accolades.
For us, Messi isn't just a player; he's an artist. However, instead of using a brush, he paints a picture with his dribbling that defies physics. His vision is unparalleled, and his goal-scoring record is simply ridiculous. With a record eight Ballon d'Or awards and the coveted World Cup trophy finally in his cabinet, along with countless club titles, his individual brilliance and team impact are beyond dispute.
Cristiano Ronaldo
If Messi is the artist, Ronaldo is the relentless goal-scoring machine. It's probably only a matter of time before he reaches that coveted 1000 goal mark! Most players don't even reach 1000 games, let alone 1000 goals! His drive, athleticism, and sheer hunger for success is what sets him apart.
He has won five Champions League titles, multiple league crowns across different countries, a European Championship with Portugal, and five Ballon d'Ors and he's still not done. His incredible longevity at the top, make him an undeniable force and a true global icon.
Thierry Henry
If you ask many ex-professionals who have played in the English Premier League who the best player to have played in the competition is, Thierry Henry will often come out on top. Henry had a bit of everything, pace, power, technique and everything he did on a football pitch had a touch of class about it. In the days where EPL strikers were very physical and rugged specimens, Henry redefined the modern striker.
He was the focal point of both Arsenal and France's greatest teams and he has to go down as the greatest player to have never won a Ballon d’Or.
Zinedine Zidane
Much like Messi, Zizou was often described as an artist. However, unlike Messi who would be a Da Vinci or Picasso, Zidane had a spark about him, more akin to Vincent van Gogh. You would be hard pressed to find a player in world football that has a better touch than the French midfielder.
He was a big game player, who led by example and he's also a player we believe would have fit into any era, as his resilience and adaptability was unrivalled.
Luka Modric
The quiet man who did all of his talking on the pitch. The Croatian had an unbelievable engine, pinpoint passing accuracy and could control the tempo of a game like he was conducting an orchestra. He is a five-time Champions League winner, but perhaps his greatest achievement is winning a Ballon d'Or in the Messi-Ronaldo era, when both superstars were at the height of their careers.
Kylian Mbappe
It's hard to believe that Kylian Mbappe is only 26 as it feels like he has been around forever. For that reason, the French man still has time to climb these rankings. He has explosive pace, can go both ways and has a keen eye for goal, breaking numerous goalscoring records wherever he goes. It's surely only a matter of time before the World Cup winner picks up his first Ballon d'Or award.
Andres Iniesta
Iniesta revolutionised the game of football (big statement, we know)! He was at the heart of both Barcelona & Spain, both of whom redefined the game with their Tiki-taka style of play. During his career, you very seldom saw Andres in the headlines or under the spotlight, as he went about his business quietly. However, as you look back upon his career, you can realise and appreciate all that he's done.
Xavi Hernández
Xavi, Iniesta’s partner in crime! As we look back throughout football we cannot think of a better midfield pairing than these two. Oddly, they were very similar players, which often doesn't work in football. However, with these two in your side, you knew your team would see a lot of the ball and retain possession. Xavi’s passing range was legendary and he reminds us of the equivalent of an NFL Quarterback.
Ronaldo Nazario
Ronaldo Nazario or R9 was a beast of a player and like nothing we had seen before he came along. He was both fast and powerful and terrorised defenders with his dribbling and clinical finishing. He won two World Cups in two different decades and scored 62 goals in 98 appearances for his country. Injuries hindered his career, however, he will always be regarded by many around the world as a phenom.
Ronaldinho
Ronaldinho was the epitome of entertainment. Even if he was playing against your team, you couldn't help but watch the Brazilian with a smile on your face. His dazzling skills and audacious tricks brought pure magic to the pitch. If you looked up the word ‘Flair’ in the dictionary, there would likely be a picture of Ronaldinho next to it. He truly was football's Greatest Showman.
Conclusion
Well, that's it folks. After countless toing and froing, we finally made it to the end of the list. We have to give a special mention to the likes of Wayne Rooney, Paulo Maldini and Marco Van Basten, who didn't make the list. But that's the beauty of football. It's subjective, and we love it for it. The great thing about these discussions is the passion they ignite in us all. So, who would you have included? Which player left the biggest mark on you?
