Elche are keen to prove their Spanish topflight return was no fluke by delivering strong performances in the 2025–26 season, according to former Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End defender Bambo Diaby.

Two years after their relegation to the Segunda Division, the Green-and-Whites earned automatic promotion by finishing second in the 2024–25 campaign.

With the new LaLiga season underway, the Senegalese centre half says his teammates are motivated and fully prepared to face the challenges ahead as they aim to secure their top-flight status.

"It feels fantastic to be back in the topflight after two seasons in the second division. This is where we belong, and we are fully prepared for the challenges ahead," Diaby told SportsBoom.com.

"Our promotion was the result of hard work, team spirit, and determination, and now it’s time to show that we can compete at this level."

"The squad is motivated and every player is eager to contribute to a strong season. We know the competition will be tough, but we’re confident in our abilities and our unity as a team."

"The fans have supported us all the way, and we want to make them proud as we fight to establish ourselves in LaLiga once again."

UNDERDOG STATUS FUELS ELCHE'S AMBITION

Few have given Eder Sarabia’s side much of a chance this season, with predictions pointing to a high risk of relegation and the team labelled as underdogs.

Despite this, the African remains unbothered, insisting that their underdog status could serve as motivation to prove themselves against La Liga’s elite.

"As a team, we fully embrace our underdog status. Being newly promoted brings its share of expectations and challenges, but it also offers a unique opportunity to prove ourselves," he continued.

"Opponents may underestimate us, but we have already demonstrated our quality and resilience during our time in the Segunda and that fighting spirit remains very much alive."

"Carrying the underdog label motivates us to work even harder, to stay focused, and to never take any match for granted."

"We know that every game in LaLiga will present tough opposition, but our mindset is strong, and we are prepared to rise to the occasion."

"Elche want to make a statement this season and leave a lasting impact. Also, our goal is to earn respect through performance."

The Estadio Martinez Valero side have kicked off the season strongly, staying unbeaten in their first two matches with draws against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid.

DIABY ON FACING LALIGA BIG BOYS

"Playing against Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid is always a tremendous challenge, but it’s also incredibly exciting," he added.

"These clubs have world-class players and a long tradition of success, so every match demands our full focus and determination."

"We will approach each game with a clear plan and the desire to compete at the highest level, making the most of every opportunity on the pitch. Matches against these top teams are also a chance to test ourselves, improve as a squad, and grow stronger with each experience."

"Even if the results are difficult, strong performances can boost confidence and strengthen team cohesion. Facing such elite opponents inspires us to raise our standards. We are committed to giving our best and making a strong impact throughout the season."

Rafa Mir’s 15th-minute strike cancelled out Alexander Sorloth’s early opener in the eighth minute as Elche played to a 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid.

They will look to extend their unbeaten run when they host Levante in their next outing on August 29.

After five seasons in England, Diaby moved to Elche on 22 August 2024 for an undisclosed fee.
