Who Has Scored the Most Own Goals in the Premier League?

Can there be anything worse in football for a player than scoring an own goal? The sad thing is it could come as a desperate attempt to clear the ball, an effort to block a shot or just bad luck – any footballer scoring an own goal will surely hope to never be seen again for a while! Of course, it is part of the game and while some players would never experience this in their career, others (as you will soon find out) have seen their career’s riddled with them. But who has scored the most own goals in the Premier League?

    The Unwanted Record

Richard Dunne is a man who has had the misfortune of scoring 10 own goals in his career. Granted, he has scored on eleven occasions to cancel this out (and as a center back, it is rather impressive) but either way, he flies the flag for arguably the most unwanted prize in football history. During his career, he played for Everton, Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa in the Premier League. A real old-fashioned sort of no-nonsense player who is at least seen as a really robust defender.

    (Un)Lucky Number Seven

So, while our friend Richard Dunne leads the chasing pack, there are four players who have seven own goals attributed to their names. Interestingly - and yes, those from England’s Northwest might attribute it to their ‘heart-on-their-sleeve’ nature - all three hail from Merseyside.

    Phil Jagielka

A stalwart for the Toffees and adored by Everton fans. A strong defender who took no prisoners, Jagielka scored seven own goals in his time in the Premier League. Ironically, he didn’t ever score any goals for the national side – but that might have been too much of a cross to carry!

    Jamie Carragher

Another player with seven own goals, Jamie Carragher didn’t manage to even that out on the other end of the pitch though. Scoring just three times in the league, the Liverpool legend arguably has the worst record of the lot. Boasting 508 Premier League appearances is truly remarkable though, and his proud Liverpool career stretches from 1994 all the way up until 2013.

    Martin Skrtel

Another former Red who has seven own goals attached to his Premier League record is Martin Skrtel. A Slovakian player who struck unimaginable fear into the hearts of his opponents, Skrtel can at least hold on to the fact that he was a goalscoring threat on the other end of the pitch.

In fairness, his brash and unforgiving defensive nature assisted Liverpool in earning many major trophies and accolades – he is truly a ‘Liverpudlian’ Legend.

    Lewis Dunk

Lewis Dunk is the latest player to join the ranks of seven own goals in the league. On the 1st of February 2024, Dunk scored his seventh own goal while playing for Brighton against Nottingham Forest.

Unfortunately for Dunk, he has had the horrible luck (if we can attribute this to luck) of scoring own goals for various clubs.

    Other Notable Mentions

There are of course a number of players who have scored own goals during their playing career, but these notable mentions have all scored between two and six own goals in the Premier League.
