Exclusive: Àlex Moreno Set for La Liga Return as Girona Lead Race for Aston Villa Left-Back

Alex Moreno is set to return to Spain this summer, with Girona leading the race to sign him for around £4.5million. Despite interest from Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano, the left-back is keen on a move back to his home country. Villa are prepared to make a loss on Moreno, whose contract ends this season after a stop-start spell.

Alex Moreno is set to head back to Spain this summer, SportsBoom sources can exclusively reveal.

Girona are the frontrunners to land the Aston Villa left-back before the end of the window.

Our sources have been told officials from the La Liga club have held positive talks over a move in the region of £4.5million for the 32-year-old.

But it is also understood former club Real Betis are keen to make a move for the defender, who helped them to their fist Cope el Ray in 17 years in 2022.

Moreno’s agent is eager to get his player the right deal as he plots the final big move of his career and are holding out for the best option.

Another former club, Rayo Vallecano, where Moreno spent five seasons, are also understood to be keeping tabs of the player’s potential movements.

Leeds United were linked with the Spaniard earlier in the window, but it is believed he has his heart set on a return to his home country.

    Closed Chapter

It has been a stop-start spell at Villa since Moreno made the £13million move in 2023, where he was Unai Emery's first signing in the January window.

Villa are resigned to making a significant loss on the player, whose contract is up at the end of the season.

Moreno has made 40 Premier League appearances for the Midlands club, but his progress in England was significantly halted by hamstring surgery just four months into his time at the club.

Last season, he was shipped out to Nottingham Forest on loan, where he made 11 league starts and four more appearances off the bench.
