Aston Villa will resurrect their interest in Nicolas Jackson if the Chelsea striker fails to secure a permanent move to Bayern Munich next summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Jackson joined the German giants on loan earlier this term, after a series of disciplinary indiscretions and Liam Delap’s arrival combined to limit his first team opportunities in west London.
The Senegal international is proving a popular figure at the Allianz Arena, with two of his four goals so far this season coming in the famous red and white shirt.
But he is yet to score in the Bundesliga, with both of those efforts coming in the Champions League against Pafos and Club Brugge respectively.
Villa were desperate to land Jackson before the new season began, only to see their swoop thwarted by profit and sustainability regulations. But our sources understand the board at Villa Park are confident their work on Emery’s budget will leave them in a position to revive it over the coming months.
Bayern paid a reported fee of nearly £17m to process Jackson’s switch. But a number of high profile figures behind the scenes have repeatedly denied the existence of an obligation to purchase agreement, insisting instead that a decision will be taken on his future once the present campaign draws to a close.
Potential Kane Replacement
That could hinge on the wishes of another former Premier League star, Harry Kane, who continues to be linked with a return to England and possibly his old club Tottenham Hotspur.
Although he is known to be enjoying his time on the continent, Jackson would prefer to be a regular starter rather than an impact player from the bench.
And that has alerted Emery’s employers to the possibility of re-entering the race for his services, after failing in a bid to capture Jackson earlier this year. He also counts Newcastle among his list of admirers, with the Saudi-bankrolled side in a better position to match Chelsea’s likely £70m asking price.
However, Villa believe the fact that Birmingham is within commutable distance of Jackson’s home in London and the prospect of being a pivotal figure in Emery’s plans could give them the edge.
