Palmeiras are considering the possibility of offering Gabriel Jesus an escape route out of Arsenal if the centre-forward continues to struggle for opportunities at Arsenal, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Having returned from a lengthy lay-off after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament, the centre-forward faces an uncertain future in north London following Viktor Gyokeres’ arrival over the summer.
Although The Gunners have no intention of selling Jesus while the hunt down a first Premier League title since 2004, our sources have learnt they could be tempted to cash-in on the 28-year-old when the campaign draws to a close.
And with the player himself not wanting to be tagged as a ‘super sub’, that has placed his former club on red alert as they look to consolidate their position as one of South America’s footballing powerhouses.
Abel Ferreira’s side, who were recently beaten by fellow Brazilian behemoths Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores final, remain one of the most financially powerful clubs on the continent despite that heartbreaking defeat.
However, a tranche of departures has seen their core revenue levels stagnate, leaving them increasingly dependent upon external investment to preserve that status.
DISILLUSIONED
Ferreira’s employers believe bringing Jesus back to Sao Paulo could help rectify that imbalance, proving the catalyst for the return of many supporters who are in danger of growing disillusioned by big-name exits.
Flamengo, their arch-rivals from Rio de Janeiro, could also enter the race while Corinthians, Palmeiras’ near neighbours, have also kept a watching brief on the situation.
Jesus’ preference is to remain at the Emirates Stadium or join another of Europe’s leading sides if he is forced to look elsewhere for regular game time.
But the prospect of rejoining the outfit where he began his professional career, netting 28 times in less than 90 outings before being lured across the Atlantic by Manchester City, would also appeal.
Jesus is under contract with Arsenal until 2027, meaning they are likely to consider all serious offers when the transfer window reopens later this year.
