Club legend Maximilian Arnold is on the verge of extending his career-long stay at Wolfsburg, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The captain is out of contract at the end of the season and our sources have been told talks between the two parties got underway in recent weeks.

And our sources understand a two-year contract extension should be a mere formality with Arnold eager to stay at the club.

The 31-year-old has scored once and provided two assists in the club’s first five Bundesliga outings this term.

It is understood talks between the club and the player would usually have started much sooner.

But Wolfsburg higher-ups understandably wanted to give incoming boss Paul Simonis time to run the rule over his new squad before making any decisions.

Arnold has impressed so far this season and proved to Simonis he still has plenty to give in a Wolfsburg shirt.

Earlier this season, his latest long-range effort set a league record as he hit his 22nd goal from outside the box, a dramatic 99th-minute free-kick, to go clear of Diego and Marco Reus.

Long Stay

Arnold has spent 16 years at the club and would dearly love to go down in history as a one-club player.

He graduated from the club's academy and became Wolfburg’s youngest ever debutant in 2011, aged 17 years and 190 days and has since gone on to make almost 400 appearances for the club.

During his rare unbroken spell, he has scored 45 goals and provided 43 assists.

He scored two goals in five games as Wolfsburg won their first German Cup in the 2014/15 campaign and has been capped three times by Germany.

Arnold shone at the U21 European Championship and was named in the Team of the Tournament as Germany lifted the trophy.
