Celtic will attempt to persuade Ange Postecoglou to make what would be an emotional return to Glasgow next season if results do not improve under Wilfried Nancy, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Despite only taking charge of the reigning SPL champions earlier this month, Nancy is already under severe pressure after losing his first three games in charge including Sunday’s League Cup final against St Mirren.
Although The Hoops’ hierarchy have no plans to dispense with the Frenchman’s services just yet, preferring instead to give him time to impose his methods on a squad seemingly bereft of confidence, they will not hesitate to act at the end of the campaign should a fifth straight title prove elusive.
Postecoglou’s reputation took a knock when he was sacked by Nottingham Forest following a brief but disastrous spell in the east Midlands.
But he remains highly regarded north of the border after winning five major trophies during his reign at Parkhead before leaving for Tottenham Hotspur.
SportsBoom previously reported that Celtic attempted to open talks with Ange Postecoglou in October, but the Australian was reluctant to move so quickly into a new role following his sacking by Nottingham Forest.
OPPORTUNITY
However, the 60-year-old decided against throwing his hat into the ring then. Should a suitable opportunity in the MLS not prove forthcoming - Postecoglou is thought to be keen on the idea of working in the United States - then he is likely to reconsider if Nancy fails to inspire a dramatic upturn in form.
Crucially, Postecoglou’s presence would also help to galvanise a club which is facing intense scrutiny from a disillusioned support base after a disappointing start to the campaign.
Nancy, aged 48, built his own reputation in North America after impressing with CF Montreal and Columbus Crew.
But he has so far struggled to make a good impression at Celtic Park, with a series of disjointed displays leading some to question his credentials.
Nancy played professionally and semi-professionally in France before moving to Canada in 2005.
