Thomas Tuchel is still expected to part company with England this summer if they underperform at the World Cup despite putting pen to paper on a new, extended contract only last week, SportsBoom can reveal.

A controversial choice to replace Sir Gareth Southgate, Tuchel has nevertheless won over many Three Lions' fans with his no-holds-barred approach towards selection since taking charge.

After being asked to stay in charge by the Football Association until after the next European Champions, the governing body are also clearly admirers of Tuchel’s methods.

However, sources close to the England squad believe he is unlikely to remain at the helm beyond the upcoming tournament in North America and Mexico if they fail to reach at least the semi-final stage.

Although its exact contents remain a closely guarded secret, one senior figure with knowledge of the situation last night suggested the agreement Tuchel accepted is likely to contain a break clause, enabling all parties concerned to tear-it up in certain circumstances.

Clubs After Tuchel

Although Tuchel is committed to The Three Lions, he is thought to envisage a return to club management after completing the latest phase of his career.

Aged 52, he coached Augsburg, Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before being appointed by Paris St Germain in 2018. Three years later he joined Chelsea, leading them to Champions League success before leaving Stamford Bridge following Clearlake Capital’s takeover.

It was in the French capital where the strident thinking which has become his trademark first became apparent.

Manchester United have expressed an interest in naming him as Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor. But, with interim Michael Carrick impressing in the role so far, a position at Old Trafford might not become vacant, one of the reasons why the FA’s offer proved so tempting.

England have won nine of their 10 outings so far under Tuchel, and head to the USA, Canada and Mexico as one of the favourites to prevail despite the seemingly unfavourable conditions.
