Everton defender Mason Holgate is wanted by Sheffield United, West Brom and Stoke City, SportsBoom sources can exclusively reveal.

The Jamaican international centre-back is out-of-contract at the end of the month having been told he is surplus to requirements by the Toffees.

And now the 28-year-old is being courted by former loan clubs West Brom and Sheffield United, with Stoke having also entered the mix for his signature now the summer transfer window has reopened.

Holgate impressed on loan with the Baggies last season, but the club frustratingly missed out on a play-off place despite showing promotion promise for much of the season.

Holgate is well-liked in the dressing room and keen to extend his stay if a deal can be struck.

However, promotion-hungry Blades have also enquired about securing his services, as have the Potters who are hungry to strengthen at the back.

A high-profile Barnsley academy graduate alongside England and Manchester City centre-back John Stones, Holgate signed for the Toffees in August 2015 on a five-year deal from the Tykes.

He went on to play nine seasons in the Premier League for the Merseyside club, amassing 150 games – 127 of them at the top level.

PECKING ORDER

But after playing over 20-plus games for three seasons in a row from 2019-2022, Holgate slipped down the pecking order and has spent the last few seasons out on loan.

He was first loaned to West Brom in the 2018-19, then was loaned to Southampton and the Blades for the 2023-24 season, before returning to the Baggies last season.

Holgate played 26 games in the Championship last season, with injuries having limited his playing time.

But he is now hungry to secure a permanent deal and play regular football next season.

Speaking exclusively to SportsBoom in January this year, Holgate revealed: “The last couple of years have been a bit tough for me personally."

“I’ve been injured a lot, I did [tore] my ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] two years ago and didn’t play when I came back, so I went on loan last year."

“I’ve been very lucky to have played in the Premier League for ten seasons but I feel as though it was also my hard work that put me in that position.”
