Defender Radu Drăgușin could be handed an escape route out of Tottenham Hotspur as Fiorentina prepare to re-open negotiations for his services, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Despite being a key player for Romania, the 24-year-old has endured a frustrating spell in the capital since leaving Genoa 26 months ago.
And that has alerted I Viola to the possibility of luring him back to Italy once the Premier League season concludes, our sources understand.
However, officials at the Stadio Artemio Franchi will only firm-up their interest if they avoid relegation following a difficult campaign in Florence.
Paolo Vanoli, whose side currently sit two places and two points above the drop zone, is understood to view Drăgușin as a potentially valuable signing as he plots a major makeover of the squad he inherited from his predecessor Stefano Piolo.
Drăgușin was reportedly set to leave Spurs in January, with Las Palmas defender Mika Marmol, who has a £10m release clause, lined up as his replacement, but both moves ultimately fell through.
Fiorentina Face Summer Rebuild
But neither they nor Drăgușin, who despite his difficulties in north London remains an integral part of his national team’s plans, are minded to explore the possibility of a switch if they fail to retain elite level status.
Spurs are also fighting to avoid slipping into the second tier, after Igor Tudor failed to inspire an upturn in results following Thomas Frank’s departure earlier this term.
Even if they survive, Spurs' bosses are unlikely to stand in Drăgușin’s way if he asks to leave in search of regular first team football elsewhere.
Spurs' hierarchy also have a proven track record of being able to negotiate deals with the Tuscans, having dispatched Manor Solomon there on loan.
The relationships which were established during those negotiations will prove crucial if Fiorentina do decide to act on their interest having previously courted Dragusin during the winter window.
Fabio Paratici, who previously served as Spurs’ joint sporting director, is now overseeing strategic planning in Florence and is expected to resurrect negotiations about the centre-half over the coming weeks.
Despite being born in Bucharest, Drăgușin began his career with Juventus before heading to Il Grifone following temporary spells with Sampdoria and Salernitana.
