Former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood is eyeing a controversial return to the Premier League, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The 24-year-old centre-forward has managed to resurrect his career and put a turbulent past behind him by in France.
In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
But in February 2023 all the charges against him were dropped and Greenwood was loaned to Spanish side Getafe, a move which was the start of his comeback.
United sold him to Marseille the following season and it is there that Greenwood has been scoring goals for fun in Ligue 1 and showing the form which United would love to have in their armoury, especially after a humbling 1-0 defeat to ten-man Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Greenwood impressed with 21 goals in 34 league games in his first season in the French top-flight.
And this season he already netted ten goals in 12 league games and is looking to get on the scoresheet again tonight as Marseille host Newcastle United in the Champions League at the Stade Velodrome under former Brighton and Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi.
LOVING LIFE
In all, Greenwood has scored 33 goals in 52 games for Marseille and has been loving life on the Mediterranean Sea.
Some people might wonder why a return to the English top-flight. Quite simply, our sources have learnt, is that Greenwood feels he has unfinished business.
He was tipped to be a real star for the future before his personal life imploded.
But, over three years on from the start of the controversy, life could not be better for the former England hitman.
And if he keeps scoring goals at the rate he currently is, then it’s little surprise that Premier League and some of Europe’s top outfits will stand up and take note.
Greenwood penned a five-year contract with Marseille in July 2024, a deal worth in the region of £30million with add-ons.
But the forward wants another crack at the Premier League, confident he can build on the 35 goals he scored in 129 games during a four-year spell at United.
