Exclusive: Former Newcastle United Defender Jamal Lewis Wanted by Saudi Pro League Club Al-Qadsiah

Former Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis is wanted by Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Left-back Lewis has been a free agent ever since being released by the Magpies this summer.

And our sources have now learnt his representatives are in dialogue with Al-Qadsiah – who are fourth in the current league standings - about a move overseas.

The club, who are based in the eastern city of Khobar, are keen to strengthen their squad as they look to challenge current champions Al-Ittihad and former winners Al-Nassr for the crown this season.

Al-Qadsiah have never won the competition since inception in 2008 and have big-money backers who are prepared to invest in former Premier League andf international talent to bolster their ranks.

And experienced Northern Ireland international Lewis fits the bill perfectly having been capped 39 times by his country and played four seasons in the Premier League.

PREMIER LEAGUE EXPERIENCE

The 27-year-old full-back, whose contract expired at the end of June, enjoyed one season with former club Norwich City in the top-flight back in the 2019-20 season.

He then had three seasons with Newcastle in the Premier League before being let go at St James’ Park at the end of his previous three-year deal.

SportsBoom exclusively revealed that Lewis was on the radar of a trio of Championship sides before the summer transfer window shut, with the Canaries, West Brom and Middlesborough all having expressed an interest in trying to sign him

A move abroad could be a good move for the defender as he seeks regular football, but as a free agent there is still a chance he could play in England or Scorland this season, especially give no fee is attached to any potential move.

Lewis commanded a £45,000-a-week wage with Newcastle, but Al-Qadsiah – like many of their rivals – have deep financial pockets as they look to support a successful title-charge this season.
