Ibrahima Konaté remains hopeful a new deal can still be struck with Liverpool, but time is fast running out as growing interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid threatens to derail negotiations.

SportsBoom can exclusively reveal the France international still wants to extend his stay at Anfield and remain a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defence.

However, talks over a fresh contract have stalled, leaving the powerful centre-back facing what could be last-chance saloon to resolve his future with the Reds.

With March now here and little over three months left on his current deal, Konaté is keen for a swift resolution as uncertainty continues to swirl around his next move.

The 26-year-old defender has become a major presence at the heart of Liverpool’s backline since arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 after the Reds triggered his £36million release clause.

Since making the switch to Merseyside, Konaté has racked up more than 170 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, 110 in the Premier League, chipping in with several important goals while establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most physically dominant defenders.

FORMIDABLE

Standing at 6ft 4in, the French international’s pace, strength and aerial power have made him a formidable opponent for attackers, while his calmness in possession has also become a key part of Liverpool’s defensive structure and played a key role in helping them win the Premier League title last season.

Before his move to England, Konaté made close to 100 appearances for Leipzig, where he quickly earned a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young centre-backs after breaking into the first team as a teenager.

He has also become a regular member of the France team squad, having been capped 26 times and featuring in major tournaments for his country.

But his contract situation has alerted several of Europe’s elite clubs, with Real Madrid among those watching developments closely.

ADMIRERS

The Spanish giants are long-time admirers of Konaté and believe he has all the attributes to strengthen their defence for years to come.

Should Liverpool fail to break the deadlock in negotiations, Madrid could find themselves in a hugely advantageous position. If Konaté runs down the remainder of his contract and leaves this summer, they could swoop for him on a bargain free transfer.

Such an opportunity would most likely spark a scramble among Europe’s biggest clubs, all eager to snap up one of the continent’s most sought-after defenders.

The only stumbling block could be Konaté’s considerable wages, although with no transfer fee pay to fork out, that gives any potential buyers plenty of leverage to get a deal done.

Liverpool are still hopeful an agreement can be reached, but with time running out and Real circling, the coming weeks could prove decisive in shaping Konaté’s future.
