Leeds United are in discussions with defender Junior Firpo over a new improved contract at Elland Road despite growing interest one of the club’s star performers last season, SportsBoom sources can reveal.
Former Bareclona left-back Firpo has been linked with a move back to his old club Real Betis, with Premier League clubs Everton and West Ham having expressed an interest in signing the player when his contract expires at the end of June.
But Leeds hope to keep hold of the experienced Dominican Republic international defender ahead of their return to the top-flight after last season’s memorable Championship-winning campaign.
It’s little surprise Firpo, capped 11 times by is country, has attracted plenty of potential suitors after a string of assured performances for Daniel Farke’s side in the second tier.
But the flying full-back has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal after four seasons at Elland Road, two of which were spent in the Premier League.
Firpo, 28, stuck with the Whites after they were relegated back to the Championship and needed two seasons to earn their place back in the top-flight.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
However, after such a long time in Yorkshire the former La Liga man is understandably looking at all of his options.
But he has loved his time with Leeds and is understood to welcome a third season in the Premier League as long as contract terms can be agreed.
Last month Leeds confirmed their retained list, with midfielder Joshua Guilavogui deemed surplus to requirements.
And both Manor Solomon and Joe Rothwell returned their respective loan clubs, although SportsBoom exclusively revealed the Whites are in talk with Rothwell about a return for next season having been a big success at the club.
A further ten players were released ahead of next season as manager Farke looks to bolster his squad for what promises to be a real test of the club’s quality back in the big time.
