Chelsea’s hierarchy are set to ignore Liam Rosenior’s plea for some experienced heads to bolster his squad next season, preferring instead to press ahead with their experiment in potential rather than proven talent, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Although Rosenior accepts the policy being pursued by Stamford Bridge’s owners BlueCo, which focused on purchasing players likely to grow in value over the course of their lengthy contracts, he believes there is now a compelling case for a sprinkling of older heads to also arrive following Tuesday’s Champions League drubbing by Paris St Germain.
Chelsea’s performance against Luis Enrique’s men brutally exposed the lack of nous and know-how within their ranks, a weakness compounded by Rosenior’s inexperience on the European stage.
However, the former Strasbourg and Hull City chief insists the inconsistent performances which plague his squad could largely be rectified if they recruit someone well-versed in the demands and pressures of representing a European giant.
Rosenior is bracing for a serious showdown with Chelsea’s hierarchy, who appear ready to undermine him by pushing for Liam Delap’s sale and framing the striker as a failed project. Despite this, the head coach remains steadfast in his belief in Delap’s talent, arguing that with proper integration and trust, the young forward could flourish at Stamford Bridge. The standoff underscores the growing tension between Rosenior’s vision for the squad and the owners’ willingness to cut their losses on promising youth.
CUSTODIAN
Thiago Silva, previously of PSG, excelled in the role of Chelsea’s team custodian before being allowed to return to Brazil following four seasons in west London.
He also completed spells with the likes of Dynamo Moscow and Milan ahead of his move to France, and was credited with getting the best out of The Blues’ up-and-coming young stars.
Rosenior will try and make the case that by signing at least one player of the same ilk this summer would accelerate the development of assets such as Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Wesley Fofana, potentially also persuading them to commit their futures to his side as it struggles to claim a place in UEFA’s premier club competition next term.
Although some members of the consortium which runs The Blues are thought to be broadly sympathetic to the head coach’s plea and plight, others are minded to press ahead regardless and would rather change the identity of the person at the helm rather than abandon their bold approach.
