Exclusive: Glasner’s Outburst at Palace Damages Manchester United Manager Chances

Oliver Glasner's public criticism of Crystal Palace's board has jeopardized his chances of becoming Manchester United's next manager. His confrontational approach has seen his name slip down the list of candidates, with Thomas Tuchel and Roberto de Zerbi also being considered for the position. Despite his desire to stay in England after leaving Palace, it remains to be seen if United will ultimately choose him as the new manager.

Oliver Glasner’s public criticism of Crystal Palace’s board has damaged his chances of becoming Manchester United’s next manager, SportsBoom understands.

Although Old Trafford chiefs have not entirely ruled the Austrian out of the race to be named Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor, our sources have been told they are concerned by his recent decision to call-out Eagles chief Steve Parish and his associates following a disagreement over transfer policy.

Although Parish and the rest of Palace’s hierarchy refused to dispense with Glasner’s services after his extraordinary outburst - believed to have been prompted by Marc Guehi’s switch to Manchester City - they also shed few tears when the 51-year-old confirmed he would leave Selhurst Park at the end of the present campaign.

Senior figures at United, where Michael Carrick has been placed in interim charge until Amorim’s permanent replacement is unveiled, interpreted Glasner’s actions as a ‘come-and-get-me’ plea.

However, they also fear his fiery personality is not suited to life at a club where even seemingly inconsequential events are subjected to the most intense scrutiny.

Coupled with the fact director of football Jason Wilcox is becoming an increasingly influential figure behind the scenes, the deterioration of his relationship with Amorim effectively precipitated the Portuguese’s departure, Glasner’s confrontational approach has seen his name slip down the list of candidates being considered for one of the highest profile roles in world football.

With or without a long-term manager yet confirmed, Manchester United are already planning a full midfield reset this summer, with the board reportedly holding talks with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as part of an ‘all-in’ approach.

Big Decision

Roberto de Zerbi, another thought to be in the frame after impressing with both Brighton and Hove Albion and Marseille, also has a reputation for being combative but has notably toned down his rhetoric since arriving in France.

Thomas Tuchel, who is currently preparing to lead England to this summer’s World Cup in North America and Mexico, is keen to explore the idea of joining United if his deal with the FA is not renewed following the tournament.

If he is overlooked by Wilcox and part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Glasner’s preferred option would be to remain in England having led Palace to FA Cup success and into Europe during what has been an eventful reign in south London.

He has previously worked for LASK, Vfl Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt before heading to Palace.
