Manchester United are ready to crank up their pursuit of Bayern Munich flyer Alphonso Davies as they line up a blockbuster summer swoop to fix their troublesome left-back position, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Our sources understand Old Trafford chiefs have made strengthening the left side of their defence a top priority after a season plagued by injuries and inconsistency in the role.
And experienced Canada international Davies has emerged as one of the club’s headline targets, even though he sustained a frustrating torn muscle in his right thigh in Bayern's last game.
United scouts have been closely tracking the Bayern star, with the Red Devils prepared to splash serious cash to lure one of the world’s most electrifying full-backs to the Premier League.
Davies, 25, is currently in his eighth season in the Bundesliga and remains under contract with the German giants until 2030, meaning any deal would command a hefty transfer fee.
Sources in Germany believe Bayern would demand upwards of £70million before even entertaining the idea of letting him leave the Allianz Arena.
REPUTATION
The lightning-quick defender has built a formidable reputation since arriving from Vancouver Whitecaps in a £10million move in January 2019.
Since then, Davies has developed into one of Bayern’s most dangerous weapons from deep.
He has racked up 238 appearances for the Bavarian giants in all competitions, including 162 Bundesliga outings, while scoring 14 goals and delivering countless assists from the left flank.
Davies is currently playing under Bayern boss Vincent Kompany, the former Manchester City captain and Premier League legend.
Kompany’s side are once again setting the pace in Germany and look firmly on course to defend their Bundesliga crown this season, with Davies continuing to be a key figure whenever fully fit.
The Canadian star has had to battle through a frustrating spell with injuries recently. Davies has worked his way back after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury before then experiencing another setback with a hamstring strain during his recovery.
United have also been linked with Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson as a cheaper alternative, but Liverpool have now entered the race for the USA international and it is believed he would prefer a move to Anfield.
DYNAMIC
But United remain convinced the dynamic defender has the quality and experience to thrive in England.
Despite never playing in the Premier League, Davies boasts a wealth of big-stage experience having won multiple Bundesliga titles and the Champions League with Bayern.
On the international stage he is equally influential, having already been capped 58 times by Canada.
Davies is also set to appear on football’s biggest stage again this summer when Canada head to the United States for the World Cup.
With United desperate to strengthen their defence and Davies fitting the bill perfectly, a huge summer transfer battle could be about to ignite.
