Manchester United are ready to launch a blockbuster £80million bid for Anthony Gordon as their winger crisis reaches boiling point, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Boss Michael Carrick is desperate to land the job on a permanent basis having succeeded Ruben Amorim, initially, until the end of the season.

And our sources understand Carrick is determined to overhaul the wide areas at Old Trafford and Newcastle United and England international livewire Gordon has emerged as the No 1 target.

United’s flanks have been ripped apart in recent years. Flop Antony has gone, Marcus Rashford has departed and Jadon Sancho is expected to seal a permanent exit following his loan at Aston Villa.

The cupboard is almost bare and Carrick wants pace, purpose and personality injected back into the first team, known for great wingers of the past like Ryan Giggs, George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Since joining Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for £45m including add-ons, the 25-year-old has played 144 times for the Magpies in all competitions, with 106 of those appearances in the Premier League.

BLISTERING

He enjoyed a blistering 2023-24 campaign, hitting double figures for Premier League goals and chipping in with a string of assists as one of Eddie Howe’s most decisive attackers.

Across his Premier League career, Gordon has now passed over 200 appearances, contributing 43 goals and bags of assists.

Even during a frustrating season this term, his underlying stats for progressive carries, successful dribbles and high presses remain among the best in Newcastle’s squad.

But United know his services won’t come cheap and are believed to be ready to spend big when the next transfer window opens to get their man.

Gordon is under contract for another four years though, with Newcastle having increased his deal to make sure they get maximum renumeration in the invent of a big summer sale.

INTENT

A move would be a huge statement of intent from United’s hierarchy as they seek to back their manager and reassert themselves among the elite.

There is also the international angle. Gordon made his senior debut for the England team in 2024 and has chalked up 16 caps.

Previously a standout star as England’s Under-21s lifted the European Championship in 2023, Gordon knows a big move could cement his place back in the senior picture.

But United are not alone in their pursuits. Premier League leaders Arsenal and Premier League champions Liverpool are also circling.
