Exclusive: Man United Make Move for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan to Challenge Andre Onana
Manchester United are considering signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan to provide competition for underperforming Andre Onana. Chelsea's interest has slowed, and United have now entered the race for Maignan, who is seen as one of the top keepers globally. With doubts over Onana's future, United are seeking more depth in the goalkeeping department for the upcoming season.

Manchester United have enquired about signing AC Milan shot-stopper Mike Maignan to put pressure on Andre Onana, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Cameroon international keeper Onana had a season to forget between the posts for the Red Devils, making a series of high-profile mistakes during the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish.
United finished 15th in the top-flight and Onana was widely-criticised for his continuing errors which contributed to Ruben Amorim’s side losing 18 of their 38 league fixtures.
Chelsea were understood to be interested in trying to sign Maignan, but a deal for the 29-year-old has stalled and our sources have learnt United have now joined the race for his signature.
France international Maignan has been capped 32 times for his country and is regarded as one of the best keepers in the world game.
And United are desperate to sign a new keeper to put the pressure on Onana, who has so far failed to live up to his £43.8million price tag having arrived at Old Trafford in July 2023 on a five-year deal.
United have considered cutting their losses and selling Onana, but the club are likely to keep the former Ajax and Inter Milan and give him the chance to redeem himself next season.
The 29-year-old has three years remaining on his current deal, with an option of an additional deal built into the contract.
NEED FOR DEPTH
But United are worried they don’t have enough depth in their goalkeeping department if Onana struggles again next season.
Second-choice keeper Altay Bayindir also made high-profile mistakes last season when he was given the chance to shine when Onana was struggling.
And with back-up stopper Tom Heaton expected to leave this summer when his deal expires at the end of the month, Amorim knows goalkeeping cover is needed for what promises to be huge season in his spell as boss.
Maignan has enjoyed four seasons for AC Milan in Serie A and played 163 games for the Italian giants since joining the club on a five-year deal in May 2021.
The former Paris St-Germain and Lille keeper has one year left on his current and AC Milan are ready to listen to offers for the player who is understood to be keen for a new challenge and the chance to play in the Premier League.
