Steven Gerrard is being sounded out over the Middlesbrough job, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Liverpool legend has emerged as a top target for the Riverside bosses and our sources have been told they will imminently contact the former Rangers boss to gauge his interest in the role.
Gerrard was interviewed for a return to Ibrox earlier this season when Russell Martin was relieved of his duties.
But he decided the timing was not right to return to the club, who he led to their first Scottish Premiership title for a decade in 2021.
Just eight months after that memorable title triumph, Gerrard moved to Aston Villa and spent less than a year in the job before getting the boot.
He has been out of work since January following an 18-month spell at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.
Out of the Blue
Whoever takes over at promotion-chasing Boro will be the club's third boss in five months after Michael Carrick's sacking and replacement Rob Edwards jumping ship for Wolves.
Edwards was stood down from Saturday’s game amid interest from his former club with Boro releasing a scathing statement revealing they would allow the former Luton boss to talk to the Premier League club.
Edwards has agreed a deal at Molineux, but is yet to be officially unveiled as their new manager.
Former Boro boss Tony Mowbray was initially in the frame, but is due to undergo surgery which has ruled him out of taking charge of the club.
Mowbray was forced to step down as Birmingham Ciy boss in May 2024 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.
He returned to management in January, but was sacked by West Brom after just two-and-a-half months.
