Newcastle United and Brentford have expressed an interest to buy Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, SportsBoom can reveal.
Sancho has one year left on his deal at Old Trafford, and it is understood Chelsea, where the player has been on loan this season, are not going to try and secure a permanent deal.
That has ignited interest from the Magpies, this season’s Carabao Cup winners, as well as the Bees, who – ironically – look set to lose star forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United.
United are reportedly set to open talks with the Cameroon international as they look to continue strengthening their squad this summer having already agreed a deal with Wolves to sign Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha.
Sancho, 25, joined the Blues in a deal that had an ‘obligation to buy’ clause in the contract.
And having decided not to do deal they will likely incur a £5million penalty for not doing so. The initial obligation to buy was reportedly around £25 million, with the player earning close to £300,000 a week.
Manchester United aren’t expected to hold out for a substantial transfer fee to let the winger leave, but clubs like Newcastle and Brentford would need to factor in his high wage demands.
Newcastle could be in a position to meet Sancho’s salary if they cash in on Anthony Gordon or Alexander Isak. Brentford, on the other hand, would likely need Sancho to accept a 50% pay cut to make the move viable, although the anticipated fee from a potential sale of Mbeumo could help fund the deal.
Sancho is understood to be wanted by a number of top European clubs, but SportsBoom understands the former England international’s desire is to remain in the Premier League having been a mainstay of the Chelsea team which finished fourth in the Premier League this season and also won the UEFA Conference League title with a 4-1 demolition of Real Betis in this year’s final at the end of last month.
STARRING ROLE
Sancho starred and scored in the final as four second-half goals sunk Betis at the Tarczynski Arena, with Champions League football secured for next season.
Sancho had hoped to stay at Stamford Bridge, but personal terms could not be reached to extend this stay in West London.
The former Watford and Manchester City academy graduate struggled to produce his best form after a high-profile £73million move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021.
And it was September 2023 that he was dropped by former United boss Erik ten Hag for “disciplinary issues” and his sub-standard “performances in training” and soon after was loaned back to his former club Dortmund.
Sancho has impressed at times for Chelsea this season, but his high wages are believed to have been a major stumbling block in the potential to agree a permanent move.
