Newcastle United have earmarked Arsenal’s Ben White as a potential replacement for Kieran Trippier, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The 35-year-old right-back is out of contract at the Magpies at the end of the season and his future at the club is far from being resolved.
Former England defender Tripper has been at St James’ Park since 2022 and our sources understand he wants a two-year contract extension.
Boss Eddie Howe has urged the club’s board to sort out the defender's contract situation as speculation continues to grow surrounding his future.
And with time dragging on, it has prompted the Magpies’ recruitment team to look for alternatives if Trippier does leave this summer.
And Arsenal’s White is at the top of their shortlist, according to sources in the north east.
Jurrien Timber has displaced White as Mikel Arteta’s first choice, which has reportedly left White disgruntled with his Gunners’ career seemingly at an end.
Newcastle have also scouted a younger alternative in Sascha Britschgi, the versatile Swiss international, but sources say he isn’t yet a ready-made Premier League player like Ben White. The Magpies see him as a long-term option rather than an immediate replacement for Trippier.
England Resurrection
White was a shock inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad, the last before this summer’s World Cup, as he was recalled following his self-imposed hiatus.
Being selected, albeit as a late call-up due to injuries, has made the £50million signing realise he needs to be constantly starting in the Premier League if he has any hopes of prolonging an international career which seemed finished little over a week ago.
It is understood Everton are also interested in the 28-year-old as David Moyes tries to bolster his backline.
Arsenal are looking to sell a number of fringe players at the end of the season after spending a whopping £250million last summer.
White has made over 130 Premier League appearances for the club since his high-profile move from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2021.
