Rangers are interested in signing former West Brom midfielder John Swift, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
But the Gers face a battle for the former England Under-21 ace’s signature, with Norwich City, Derby County, Stoke City and Portsmouth also understood to be keen to recruit the player now he is a free agent.
Swift’s contract ran out on Monday after the Baggies opted against offering the 30-year-old a new contract.
And it’s little surprise there’s growing interest in the attacking midfielder, with Scottish Premiership giants Rangers and a string of English Championship clubs circling to try and grab a bargain, especially given Swift’s vast experience in the game.
Swift enjoyed three seasons with the Baggies in the Championship amassing 107 league appearances across that period.
He also scored 15 league goals but last season played his fewest games, just 25 in the league, as he struggled to command a regular starting spot in the side.
And now the former Chelsea academy graduate is looking for a new club for next season with the Baggies looking to freshen their squad.
PREMIER LEAGUE START
Swift started his career with Chelsea but went on loan to Rotherham United, Swindon Town and Brentford to play regular football.
And it was after his 27-game spell with the Bees when Reading swooped to sign him on a three-year deal.
Swift went on to play six seasons for the Royals in the Championship, playing 202 times for the club and scoring 33 goals.
But after his three years at the Hawthorns, Swift is understood to be excited about embracing a new chapter in his distinguished career – and a move north of the border to Scotland is an option he is seriously considering.
