Exclusive: Russell Martin Targets Aaron Ramsdale to Kickstart Rangers Revolution

Rangers are set to make a move for England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, with West Ham and Leeds also interested. New boss Russell Martin is a fan of Ramsdale and a potential reunion could be on the cards. Despite interest from other clubs, Rangers could provide a promising opportunity for Ramsdale to make an impact in Europe and challenge for titles. Southampton has accepted his departure after their relegation from the Premier League.

Rangers have entered the race for England and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is already attracting interest from West Ham and Leeds, SportsBoom sources can reveal.

Russell Martin, who was unveiled as the Glaswegian giant’s new boss last week, is one of Ramsdale’s biggest admirers after luring him to St Mary’s last summer.

Although their partnership ended in disappointment, with Martin being sacked well before the Saints were relegated from the Premier League, the pair remain on good terms and would welcome the chance of working together again in the future.

West Ham remain the frontrunners to secure Ramsdale’s signature after holding talks with both the player and his representatives last week.

Having been promoted from the Championship, Leeds are also keen on adding the 27-year-old to Daniel Farke’s squad amid doubts about Illan Meslier’s top-flight suitability.

BIG IMPRESSION

However, with Martin keen to make an impression not only on the Scottish Premiership but also in Europe, swooping for Ramsdale would represent a real statement of intent not only for the one-time Swansea City chief but the new owners 49’ers Enterprises too.

Ramsdale, who turned professional with Sheffield United before joining AFC Bournemouth, is known to be attracted by the possibility of representing either West Ham or Leeds next term.

Still, with neither expected to seriously challenge for titles or trophies, the prospect of winning honours with Rangers is likely to be a huge temptation should Martin elect to move.

Appearing in Europe - Martin’s side are set to enter the Europa League - is another reason to consider heading north of the border; especially as Thomas Tuchel, now in charge of England, begins planning for the 2026 World Cup.

Southampton have accepted that Ramsdale, who has also represented Arsenal, will depart following their slide into the second tier.

Manchester United have also been linked with Ramsdale, together with Newcastle.
