Sean Dyche is a surprise candidate to become the new manager of Middlesbrough following Michael Carrick’s recent sacking, SportsBoom can reveal.

Dyche, 53, has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in January this year after just three wins from his last 19 games in charge.

After two years with the club, he was replaced by David Moyes, who returned for his second spell in charge of the Toffees after a 12-year absence.

Dyche has been heavily linked with taking over at Leicester City with uncertainty remaining over whether Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy will get the job on a permanent basis after relegation to the Championship.

Leicester remain one of the clubs Dyche has on his radar, but the shock departure of former England and Manchester United ace Carrick has left the door open for a shock move to North Yorkshire.

And now Dyche could become the man tasked with guiding Boro back to the Premier League for the first time in a decade.

DOUBLE PROMOTION

The Kettering-born boss has vast experience at Championship having twice won famous promotions to the Premier League with former club Burnley.

He enjoyed nearly a decade at Turf Moor, managing 425 games and overseeing 149 wins and 118 draws during a decorated spell in Lancashire.

But he lost 32 of his 84 games as Everton boss and ultimately paid the price for a poor run at the back end of last year which cost him his job.

SportsBoom understands Dyche would prefer to manage in the Premier League having enjoyed many seasons in the top-flight, which has included winning the Premier League Manager of the Month on three occasions.

But Dyche is also open to the challenge of trying to win Championship promotion for a third time during his distinguished career after Carrick struggled to achieve it.

Carrick, 43, guided Boro to a play-off finish in the 2022-23 season, but the club have frustratingly missed out on the top six for the past two campaigns.
