Sunderland are eyeing up a deal to try and sign sought-after midfielder Hugo Larsson, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Black Cats are impressing in their first season back in the Premier League and after seven wins and five draws are sitting pretty in seventh place in the standings.
And ambitious boss Regis Le Bris is looking to add reinforcements as the club continue to dream about securing a prized Champions League place this season.
Our sources understand Le Bris is a big fan of talented Sweden international Larsson and is hoping he can persuade the 21-year-old to buy into his blueprint for success at the Stadium of Light.
Larsson has been linked with a move to Premier League champions Liverpool, but the Reds have never made a formal offer for the playmaker.
German giants Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly shown an interest in wanting to sigh the Larsson in the past.
And now Sunderland have put themselves in the mix to sign the 12-cap international when the January transfer window opens.
Larsson could be seen as a backup target after Sunderland’s previous interest in France midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has quietened.
GROWING INTEREST
Interest is expected to grow in the talented midfielder, although he is under contract until 2029.
Larsson has been starring for club side Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga, which is where Bayern Munich first got wind of his potential.
He has played 71 games in the German top-flight following a move from Swedish outfit Malmo in May 2023.
Having graduated through Sweden’s Under-19 and Under-21 levels, Larsson has made a big impression since his move to journey.
And at just 21 that’s why a string of Europe’s elite clubs see him as a potential star for the future.
That’s no different to Sunderland, with Belgian boss Le Bris keen to add more hungry young players to his squad as they look to cement their place in the Premier League.
A fee in the region of £20-25million has already been muted for the young star, but the Black Cats expect competition for his signature once the transfer window re-opens.
