Tottenham shot-stopper Alfie Whiteman is attracting interest from of Championship clubs after being told he is surplus to requirements, SportsBoom understands.
Whiteman, 26, is one of four players being released by Spurs this month after they were all told their contracts would not be renewed.
And former England Under-19 Whiteman has now been linked with Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United and Stoke City following his pending departure from the North London club.
Soon-to-be free agent Whiteman is hungry to play regular football having been starved off opportunities with Spurs behind first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario, the club’s £17.2million signing from Italian side Empoli.
Vicario, 28, featured 36 times for Spurs last season and played in all of the club’s Europa League matches, including a famous 1-0 victory over Manchester United in this year’s final in Bilbao.
And with Czech shot-stopper Antonin Kinsky having filled in for matches when Vicario has not played, that has left Whiteman frustrated on the sidelines.
Amazingly Whiteman has not played a competitive senior match since a loan spell with Swedish outfit Degerfors during the 2022-23 season and is therefore desperate to get back between then posts.
SOLE APPEARANCE
The former Spurs academy graduate made his sole appearance for the club when he was brought on as a substitute against Ludogorets Razgrad in the Europa League in November 2020.
However, injuries haven’t been kind to the former England youth international who joined the Spurs academy in 2015 on an initial three-year deal.
The 6ft 2” goalie had surgery for a torn meniscus in April 2021 and in August 2023 suffered a bad ankle injury during the club’s pre-season tour of Singapore.
But he won a Europa League winners’ medal having been included in Spurs’ title-winning squad this season.
“Alfie is sad to be leaving Tottenham now, but he’d love the opportunity to play regular football and still has a lot to offer at only 26,” a source told SportsBoom.com.
