Wales international shot-stopper Danny Ward is eyeing up a way back to the Premier League after being told he is surplus to requirements at Leicester City, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The misfiring Foxes suffered a demoralising season as they were sent packing from the Premier League.
And as a result they have released 11 players from their books, with veteran striker Jamie Vardy and 44-cap goalie Ward the two highest-profile players to depart from the King Power Stadium.
Ward, 31, has already been linked with a move to hometown and former club Wrexham, who won promotion to the Championship next season, as well as both Leeds United and Burnley having expressed an interest in signing Ward as competition to push their current first-choice keepers.
And when his deal expires at the end of the month he will become a free transfer and an attractive proposition for clubs looking to snap up a bargain, especially give his vast experience in the game during a distinguished career.
Ward started his career with the Red Dragons in the Conference Premier way back in 2010, but he was quickly snapped up by Liverpool in 2014 and was a young first-team back-up keeper.
He played twice in the Premier League before loan moves to Morecambe, Aberdeen and Huddersfield Town to get much-needed regular football under his belt.
And his starring performances for the Terries earnt the Welshman, a move to the Premier League with Leicester, where he has spent the last seven seasons.
PREMIER LEAGUE PEDIGREE
Ward made 26 appearances in the Premier League during the 2022-23 campaign, the most of his career, but the Foxes were relegated to the Championship.
However, the club won promotion back to the top-flight at the first time of asking the following season, although Ward didn’t play a single game.
Last season he made just eight appearances all seasons, with just two for the Foxes in December in the Premier League.
It’s little wonder the £12.5million signing, who has enjoyed a nine-year international career, is keen to finish his career with a flourish, and so he is also believed to be happy at any offers in the Championship to play regular football.
A source told SportsBoom that the keeper is talking to a number of clubs about a potential move ahead of next season, although the player still things he has plenty to offer at the top level.
