With three points out of six in their first two matches, The Blues currently find themselves sitting 18th in the UEFA Champions League standings at the moment.
They will be looking to push themselves into a higher position to be in the top eight which will grant them the opportunity to go straight into the knockout phase of the competition instead of going into the play-off phase of the tournament.
Chelsea look to use their twelfth man in their next game of the competition which will be played at Stamford Bridge this Wednesday, October 22.
It is a must win game for the side in order to climb up the table. The team from England’s capital city face off against Ajax who are known to be one of the best teams in Europe. Hence, this will not be a walk in the park for The Blues.
Ajax currently sit just above the bottom of the table with two losses from their first two games.
With all this in mind, we exclusively sat down with Chelsea’s rising star Josh Acheampong to talk about the club’s upcoming fixtures and how he has adapted to life under manager Enzo Maresca.
"EVERY FIXTURE IS IMPORTANT"
Securing maximum points in their previous two games, The Blues currently find themselves sitting fifth in The Premier League standings with a vital win over the Champions, Liverpool and a convincing 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest this past weekend.
It’s vital for Chelsea to secure a win in their next Premier League fixture to strengthen their position in the standings and move closer to their ultimate goal which is winning the league.
However, this is no easy task for the World Champions as they take on a fierce Sunderland team who find themselves level on points with The Blues in seventh place. Separated by goal difference, this serves as a mouth watering fixture for Premier League spectators.
“I think every fixture is important. I think we go into every game with the same mentality to try and win. So hopefully we can do that in The Premier League and The Champions League," Acheampong told SportsBoom.com.
“We’ve always had the same mentality. I think when you play for Chelsea the goal is to win and win. So I think that overall for me, it was a good experience to win The Conference League and The World Cup.”
“The main goal is to win trophies, whether that be in the Champions League or The Premier League. I think we have high aspirations as a team."
RECENT TROPHY TRIUMPHS AND MANAGER ENZO MARESCA
The grit and fight displayed by Chelsea last season was definitely one for the books.
With the appointment of manager Enzo Maresca, the team found themselves operating like a well oiled machine, securing a top four finish which mounted them in a UEFA Champions League spot.
The team from London also went on to claim the crown in the UEFA Conference League. That was not the only title won. Chelsea played phenomenally well in the Club World Cup, ultimately emerging victorious and being crowned World Champions. This was more than enough proof that the manager had a significant impact on the team. It was seen to be the icing on the cake after a gritty season.
“In training he’s really specific. The details are really high so there’s never any grey area. If you feel confused, you can always ask him. He’s really helpful. I’ve gotten used to it. I started training when I was seventeen and I’m nineteen now so I had a quite a few sessions. I think that I’m more confident when I train and the level is really high. It's really good so I feel like I’m getting better as well.”
ACHEAMPONG LOVES THE FANS
“I think the brotherhood is good. We’ve got quite a few young players so we can talk a lot and relate a lot. I think that translates on the pitch as well when we’re that close. We love the fans and we love the support. It keeps us motivated to keep pushing on. I haven’t played in another league but I think The Premier League is such a good league with such a high level and there’s loads of top players so that’s excellent," he concluded.
