Newcastle United will consider battling Chelsea for Nathan Aké’s signature if Manchester City decide to sell the centre-half this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Having previously represented The Blues between 2012 and 2017, turning professional at Stamford Bridge after progressing through the club’s youth programme, Aké is now understood to be lining-up a return as his future with Pep Guardiola’s side remains shrouded in doubt.
But former Cherries' boss Eddie Howe, who gave the 31-year-old his big break after taking him to Dean Court eight seasons ago, is also tempted to enter the race for his services should City allow him to move on as part of a squad reprofiling exercise.
Although Aké’s preference is to remain at the Etihad Stadium and fight for his place, the Netherlands international will not tolerate being handed a bit part role moving forward as he looks to prolong his career on the international stage.
Either Chelsea or St James’ Park, where Howe now works, would prove attractive destinations if, as is being suggested, Guardiola elects to call time on what has been a hugely profitable partnership for both men.
Experienced At Highest Level
The Blues, currently led by Liam Rosenior, are interested in Aké given concerns about the effectiveness and durability of a rearguard which has been breached 12 times in its last four competitive outings.
Although age could count against him, given Chelsea’s stated policy of signing younger players with a resale value, they also have a proven track record of acquiring players they have previously sold such as Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matić and David Luiz.
Aké made only 17 appearances during his four seasons in west London, completing spells on loan at Reading and Watford before joining Bournemouth on a permanent basis after initially agreeing another temporary switch.
He played more than 100 times under Howe, whose former employers paid around £20m for his services. City then spent £41m to acquire his services in 2020, with Aké winning 10 major trophies during his time in the North-West including four Premier League titles.
