Brighton and Hove Albion’s 2024/25 campaign was one of fluctuating fortunes; glimpses of brilliance often undone by inconsistency.

While the Seagulls thrilled fans with attacking football and signature grit, they ultimately fell short of European qualification, ending the season with a sense of “what could have been.”

In an exclusive sit-down with Yankuba Minteh, the 20-year-old Gambian winger, whose debut season in the Premier League was filled with electric pace and fearless performances, opens up on Brighton’s journey, his own growth, and what the club needs to reach the next level.

It Wasn’t What We Set Out For

Asked how he evaluates Brighton’s overall campaign, Minteh doesn’t sugarcoat it.

“I would say it was a mixed season. We had good moments, we played good football, but in the end, it wasn’t what we set out for,” he said.

“Our target was to push for Europe again and build on last season. Missing out is tough to take, especially with the talent we have in the squad," he told SportsBoom.com.

From memorable wins to frustrating slumps, Minteh reflects on the highs and lows that defined the Seagulls’ season.

“Beating Manchester United at home, that was massive for us moments like that make you believe. But we also had games where we let leads slip or struggled to break teams down. Those little drops in concentration or energy cost us a lot.”

Missing Out on Europe: A Bitter Pill

Minteh’s explosive debut campaign earned him plaudits; and Brighton fans quickly took notice of the young Gambian’s flair and fearlessness.

But, despite some dazzling performances, Brighton couldn’t replicate the consistency needed to secure a European spot.

“It hurts, for sure. Everyone in the dressing room was disappointed. We had meetings toward the end where we said, ‘Let’s finish strong, let’s fight to the end,’ but we let it slip at key moments,” Minteh admitted.

“The group is hungry though. We know we’re good enough to compete in Europe. That’s the next step.”

Why Brighton Fell Short and where they must improve

When pressed on the reasons behind Brighton’s European miss, Minteh pointed to more than just bad luck.

“We had some injuries, yes, but also inconsistency. Sometimes we didn’t start games well, or we lost focus in the second half. In the Premier League, I think that’s the difference between 3 points and none.”

So what must change if Brighton are to bounce back stronger?

“We need to improve tactically; our game management, especially when we’re ahead. And mentally, to stay sharp in every game, not just the big ones. That’s something the manager’s been pushing.”

With another summer window looming, where does Minteh think the reinforcements will come?

“I think maybe a bit more depth in midfield, and someone who can help control games when it gets tense. And possibly another forward; someone experienced, to give us more variety in attack.”

The Qualities Brighton Must Target

For Minteh, recruitment isn’t just about ability; it’s about mentality.

“We need players who want to fight, who don’t hide in difficult moments. You can have all the skills, but if you don’t have the hunger, you won’t survive in this league. We need that winning mentality.”

As the season fades into memory, Minteh’s determination is crystal clear. The missed opportunity is a sting; but also a spark.

“We know we can do better. Next season, we go again; stronger, sharper, and with a point to prove.”
